NAB Complimentary Travel Insurance

Hi guys,

I'm going to be travelling soon and was thinking of booking my tickets through my platinum card to get the complimentary travel insurance. Has anyone had any experiences with it? In terms of what it covers how sufficient is it? Would I just be better off getting insurance with a travel agent? I'm only going for two weeks.

Any tips and help is much appreciated.

  • Tends to be International cover only FYI. I'd be interested to know if NAB offers Domestic cover.

Reading through the PDS for my Bankwest cover, it all looked incredibly similar to separate policies. I've never had the need to claim to find out though.

    Read the PDS
    https://www.nab.com.au/personal/banking/credit-cards/manage-…

Compare to the PDS of TID
    https://www.travelinsurancedirect.com.au/what-we-cover

Only you can read the booklet and understand how they applies to you - if you meet the minimum spend if there is one, your medical conditions, the countries you are going to, if you plan to ride motorcycles etc

Check for a deal and use cashrewards e.g.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/travelinsurancedirect.com…

Do not involve a travel agent, you are paying more that way.

  • Read the PDS and see if it is an adequate level of cover for your travel.

  • I typically rely on credit card supplied insurance.
I am reassured because there was a story of a woman with terrible spinal injuries after a balcony fall in Thailand who was airlifted etc. based on her complimentary card insurance.

But I only insure for catastrophes. If you like to get your hotel bill paid if your flight gets cancelled, or a replacement if you lose your camera, the excess on most of the free policies, and the hoops to claim, mean they aren't suitable.

  • Each policy is a little different, we don't know what you need, so do the homework and read the PDS

  • If you can read you can get the answers to your questions by reading the pds

    • op has a platinum card = too lazy

  • Make yourself aware of policy restrictions for preexisting illnesses. If you have any, some policies will accept doctor's certificate that you are fit enough to undertake the travel

  • I am currently putting a claim through on my NAB credit card insurance ,its with QEB I can let you know how it goes. Mine is for missed flights caused by an an Air India problem at the airport.

  • Depends on your trip. If doing "adventurous" things then it might not be enough. If doing a stockstandard city holiday then practically all insurance should cover you.
Things to look for that you may be doing: cover for hiking high altitudes, cover for renting your specific type of car and what minimum insurance need to get from the rental agency (some don't cover caravans etc), pre existing conditions cover, if needed.
Overall you need to give more information about your trip, or read the PDS thoroughly.

  • Last time I checked, there was a hefty excess of around $200 on credit card insurance claims that could not be reduced.

Not an issue if you are covering yourself for medical, etc. But for small claims (eg. lost luggage) it makes it not so worthwhile.

So I always took out TID or 1cover which was cheap and had $0 excess.

But that was a while ago since my last trip and things could of changed.

Back finally due to the Airlines tardiness in replying with information needed, and there were two airlines involved .QBE thats who NAB have their travel insurance through.were fantastic to deal with received payment yesterday. If only Qantas was a lot better with replying to customers would have been fixed a lot quicker .So I will still just keep using my NAB card insurance, hope this is not to late to be helpful.

    • Thanks.
I'm using my NAB Signature card insurance to cover hire car excess…..but it only covers up to 1250
