Protein Shakes / Bar or Forget Them? Advice

Hey guys,

Just a confused guy here needing help with all things protein.

I'm currently getting back into gym and a big focus on getting bigger too. I'm wondering if protein shakes and/or bars are really worth considering taking on top of what I'm eating anyway.

I've taken shakes in the past and can't stomach the taste regardless of flavour. Protein bars I've had in the past and can stomach.

I'm currently going between a chicken/fish/meat dinner plan so not sure if it's worth the hassle having this extra protein?

Some people say yes, some say no so its all confusing. Would love your thoughts :)

just work out your macros and see if you need them

    No point in using them.

This question has been asked and answered numerous times before.

Bulk WPC is a cheaper and more convenient source of protein than any nominally priced meat.

Protein bars are generally quite expensive compared to chicken drumsticks.

  • Are you consuming enough grams of protein each day without protein supplements?

  • You really can only determine if you "need" them based on your macro count. An app like MyFitnessPal is great for that minus their recent experience with user information being breached and acquired.

Protein shakes are only a supplement to a well rounded diet. If your diet already has enough protein there is no need to supplement it with more. Your body has a saturation point when it comes to protein intake and taking more won't always correlate to bigger muscles.

The reason why people take protein is because of its convenience, goals and cost. Drinking a protein shake is a lot cheaper, faster and convenient than going to buy a meal with the same amount of protein, and having to ingest a high amount of macro nutrients you may not desire as well, especially if leaning down is a goal.

BTW protein bars are not worth it!

    All A scam

    • lol how is it a scam? that like saying the dietary content of chicken and beef is a scam

Most of the so called protein shakes are full of sugar

That's a very bad generalisation and not accurate at all. Most decent protein shakes have less than 1g sugar per ~30gram serve. "Meal replacement" shakes are quite often 50/50 protein/carbs but that is by design.

Lol guys it's ok. He doesn't even lift.

  • Back in the day my gym trainer told me to eat baked beans on toast for breakfast every day, it worked, I put on heaps of bulk. Anyway, as for protein, everyone's goals and physical situation is different. I usually have a protein shake with breaky but if I don't get a chance then after I have a workout. I don't usually bother on days I don't train. I determine such things using the highly scientific principle of 'how do I feel at the time'. :) (But logically speaking if protein shakes didn't do anything for body builders then the whole supplement industry wouldn't be there.)

The majority of supplements peddled by supplement companies are way overpriced and next to useless.

    • I don't usually bother on days I don't train.

You should unless you're just not getting enough protein on days you do train because your muscle still needs protein to repair.

  • Probably not worth it. Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tE1ePBYXPr0

  • In terms of can’t stomach the taste of shakes? Legit??
Mind over matter surely, there are plenty of different brands and ways to take the shake to impact flavor

  • As stated before, check your macros and then use them if your macros don't meet your goals. It is very easy to gain weight(fat-overeating) especially with liquid protein as it does not require much effort in chewing and it won't make you feel full either.
