Which 29er Bike - $600 Budget

Hi,
Wanting to buy a bike for riding to work and the weekend trail ride. The work commute is only 5km.
I’ve got a budget of $600
I wasn’t sure between
Reid Xenon 29 - $517 ebay
https://www.reidcycles.com.au/xenon-29.html

Scott Aspect 970 -$599 RRP
https://www.bicyclesuperstore.com.au/scott-aspect-970-2018.h…

I’d rather not go down the path of second hand ones, I bought one before and got burnt as I don’t really know what I’m looking at. Hence the new ones.

Open to any suggestions. I was looking at 29’s to make the commute a little easier.

  • The Reid has better spec components, especially the hydraulic disc brakes. Frame wise they will be much the same. The Scott is likely to have local warranty if you don't live near a Reid shop.

  • Define trail ride? These are probably only good for gravel pathways. Id doubt you be regularly riding through rock gardens ans doing small drops etc. also if a gravel pathway is your thing and you aren't mountain biking, have you considered a cyclocross bike? it has some ruggedness for trails, but do not have the hassle of maintaining suspension.

    • Cyclocross bikes can be very aggresive in geometry and not great for long distances or comfort riding. An alternative might be a ‘gravel grinder’ which will be more relaxed.

If you are commuting in or near traffic it might be better to choose a flat bar (not drop handlebars) as you sit up a bit more and can see around better.

  • I just bought a Polygon Path 3 which just arrived today. I know sod all about bikes and its been more then 20 years since I last rode a bike before tonight. Reviews were all good from what I could find. Super quick delivery and helpful sales staff on their live chat. 14 day free exchange policy if it doesn't suit you.
