Backpacks Suggestions

Hi all.

Just wondering what branda and online websites people would recommend picking up affordable backpacks from. I usually pickup one on my asia travels from one of those big market store style places where you have 200 bags to choose from and the starting price is triple the real price haha. I do find after bargaining down you can find something well below $70 aud.

Im looking for an all round utility back pack. Something that could fit a 15 to 15.6" laptop max or there abouts style yet still has one or two compartments for some magazines. Book or two. Your lunch box. Basically im trying to avoid those little Herschel like backpacks that look good but hardly hold anything. Having multi compartments is great. Big fan of a small or minor section on the back for your small items like battery pack. Earbuds. Cables etc. Side water bottle holders are a must. Im trying to find something not too casual but not too formal. So i could use it to and from work or packing a heap of stuff on holidays or going over to the gfs??

Originally i had a targus city explorer as per this:

Started to tear and ended up with an overland bag from taiwan. Cant find any mention of this online china suppleirs but at time we were told it was the better of the asian brands. Because i pack alot of stuff sometime im avoiding those cheap plasticy like backpacks as i find stitching first to go and and high volume areas such as where arm straps meet the bag tend to tear off which is how my targus went.

Has anyone found any alternatives to the typical high sierra bag which seems to be pretty bland but offers all the size and compartment funxtionality im after?

So far bagworld comes up but keen to know where everyone else gets their backpacks and what brands have been really durable. Nothing worse than finally finding a backpack and the arm seams give or the bottom easily rips a hole.

  • I've made purchases from Bagworld before and have been very happy with their prices and the speed of their delivery. I bought suitcases though so can't help you with any support on backpacks from there.

I bought my "stuff it to the brim and use everyday" backpack for $20 from Aldi in their back to school sale. I bought one three years ago and it finally split the seams at the very end of last year, having carted my netbook and all of the papers and markbooks and pencil cases etc that I need in my day to day work everyday. Sounds like it has exactly the specs you require, except that it's no longer in their inventory. But maybe keep an eye out at back to school time next year - might be handy to have a spare.

  • Leather -> Buy from England

Affordable? -> HP laptop bag or Samsonite when it's on special.

  • Have you looked at xiaomi bagpacks, ie. From gearbest?
You would need to wait for up to 15 days if you use AU express, but pricewise and quality wise they're great

  • Look out for Crumpler sales. The 15" dry red no. 5 is the best backpack for $79 I've ever used and it easily survived my Europe trip last week.

  • what's wrong with high sierra? =)

  • xiaomi 26L 15.6 inch.. A tad small but the design is very good

  • Samsonite on special from discount luggage store. I think in Brisbane it was Luggage Direct. About $100. They have some classy business ones and practical travel ones.

  • I picked up a macpac one from when they were on sale. Has a compartment which I think should hold a laptop and I'll be taking this to japan next week as a carry on. The one I got was a kahu or kahuna .. something like that

  • What's your price range?

I have a bag that travels with me and has seen some very rough use but would be AUD350ish delivered… at least. The upside is that it can hold a laptop, a couple of days clothing, toiletries and have sufficient attachment points to clip small sleeping bags and water bottles to the outside. The supports are flexible but sufficient for ~10kg of load before you feel the weight. It will hold far more than that but you will be conscious of the bag then.

  • We use OGIO backpacks. Used them for multiple international trips for the last few years and still in pretty good condition. It’s not too huge that we can still get away with calling it a “laptop bag” at the airport. Has a padded compartment at the back for my laptop and several compartments to fit books, a hoodie and travel pillow etc. Doesn’t look as daggy as some of the business backpacks. Not bad for under $150.
