  • Hmm bad timing on my part; I just ordered a Star A3000 from Dealextreme. Good to see capacitive touch at this price!

i feel identical pain i just got a motorola droid to use as a pmp only (we don't have cdma here) for $100 from eBay. So I'm very annoyed that this has popped up.

    • saw that on DX $135.

      always check out aliexpress $121.

      http://www.aliexpress.com/product-fm/384100599-Free-shipping…

      • A closer inspection will reveal all sorts of subtle differences throughout the specifications.

        • -1

          yeah, the food blender attachment.

just kidding, your right. some diffs.

I do like to deal with DX as they have always done right by me.

when you get the phone could you do a review of it on DX. I'm curious how it stacks up. whether it has true wifi. i've orderedd a few phones off DX and similar sites and I have usually been dissappointed.

      • aliexpress (alibaba) is ok sometimes but this seller you have linked to along with many others don't have feedback in the last 6 months which I personally do not trust. Not to say that they are dodgy but I personally would not buy from them.

  • +5

This is a really slow phone it’s get stuck every time when try to do something. Good price but not a good phone.

    • For what it can do and at this price it's great value.
First you pay for what you get, so being slow isn't a surprise.
Second it will be a great intro phone to Android, especially with capacitive screen, quadband, GPS and 5MP camera (quality might not be that great though)

  • +3

Carriers are so dodgy. How is this still on cupcake? Can't Optus tell that if they offered an official 2.x update it's actually more appealing to get one? Thank god for unofficial roms; but that doesn't help less technical people.

    • Why would Optus help people to "upgrade" their phones? they want you to buy a new one if you want the new bling.

In this specific case, the Backflip will sell good enough at this price point with cupcake, little incentive for them to invest the time and money to provide an official update.

i'm told zyzz has one of these.

please elaborate is this the htc legend deal?

      • +3

not sure why you are being so polite - IMHO a comment like that deserves some form of "punishment" - its one thing not to post deals ( i myself am guilty of that in a way - dont do much web browsing/shopping and when i come across something it is usually already posted) - but to tell people there are is a deal and then not post it…
        sheesh!

        • +1

I thought he was being cheeky, just refering to the legend deal that everyone knows about

        • +2

Lol, a new user name hakiu, posted a deal early this morning titled something like, 10 copies of Gran Turismo 5 @ $23 each……but sorry guys……i bought them all but he changed it to "Demon's Soul BP edition $39" before it got unpublished.

Edit: he's not new, just never posted a deal.

good to know that there are people who fail at telling jokes..

        • -4

Fair enough, tone is hard to get across on the net, some people got it, some people didn't, but most certainly a lot of people have trigger happy negging finger lol.

        • I think everyone was a little bit harsh on you, so gave you a positive to try and counteract the other votes :P

    • -2

i would have said it like this

Great deal on a pretty good looking phone.
Shame I’ve already got one of them fancy shiny HTC on a deal that "no one" knows about.

i think that would have conveyed your msg
(i didnt neg you by the way)
made a comment and hoped you would respond…

    • dupe - computer is a bit "funny" today

  • Looks nice in this Vid….but the comments below it are not encouraging:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIrmw7H-jzA

    • yeh video looks great! but yes the comments are a worry :/

  • no wi-fi? :(

    • WTF? Means no wireless tethering to other devices, ie. iPad, LAptop etc.. I guess it may be expecting a bit much for a device at this price point.

    • from gsmarena

      WLAN: Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g

but what i'm :( @ is no FM Radio

oh and video recording is shit @ CIF resolution which is pretty much useless

      • +1

my mistake there is wifi :/

      • +2

just listen to the radio over the net

        • and waste ur data quota? sure

        • An expensive thing to do on Optus prepaid.

        • there is other methods to get online…… * drum roll * wi-fi!!

        • +1

errr not when u're…… wait for it….. MOBILE.

  • Think before you buy, There is no update for this OS. still remain on Android 1.5

    https://supportforums.motorola.com/community/manager/softwar…

    • yeah but US gets upgrade.. doesn't matter.. most ppl that would want to upgrade will be able to hack it anyway with a custom rom…

      • +3

Not if its as locked down as the other motos like milestone. Moto encrypted the bootloader so full roms can only ever come from moto.

        • haha wow that's pro

    • Software Version Requirements
You can be on any of the latest versions of MOTOROLA Backflip Android 1.5 (Cupcake) software with the upgrade.

This is prolly a better deal
    http://dicksmith.com.au/product/E6835/virgin-huawei-u8150-an…

Has Android 2.2 froyo and WiFi

    • +2

With a 320x240 screen, I wouldn't recommend it. You need at least HVGA to make Android really worthwile!

    • as confirmed there is wifi on the backflip

both the huawei and backflip don't have fm radio though

and os really doesn't matter imo.. the people that care about it are the ones technical enough to load it with a custom rom.

  • would Jb hifi have this phone and would i be able to price match if they do?

    • it's a standard optus price… so yes.. if they sell optus prepaid phones there ie

  • +4

Don't compare this to other android phones.

Compare it to other handsets available for $100-$150 prepaid. It's a good deal.

  • +2

I tried this phone out. Apart from the extremely horrible QWERTY keyboard, the performance is extremely sluggish (menu transitions take a longer time than my Nuviphone A50).

The build quality is good. Better than other Android phones in the $200 price range.

It still runs Android 1.5 (ridiculously outdated) however it is upgradable to 2.1 via Rom flash.

I recommend spending $50 bucks more and getting the Garmin A50 instead for those who are on tight budgets.
For those who want something that's good out of the box, get the HTC Legend or Wildfire.

    • -1

The Wildfire is a terrible phone for its price. ($300)
The screen resolution is the same as the $160 huawei ideos
The cpu is the same as the $160 huawei ideos

      • Hi, I just thought I would let you know that I picked up the Huawei Ideos last week at CJ’s for $149 (unlocked but supposed to be locked, pre-paid), i had already added it onto the previous Ideos thread.

        • hey biggq, does your Huawei phone have Chinese language as a selectable option?

Im looking for a Android phone that has Chinese interface support.

        • Scrimshaw, I've just had a look, and i'm sorry but under Language & Keyboard settings, English (Australia), Englsh (Pakistan), English (US) and Espanol are the only listed languages, but under Voice Recognizer Settings - Language (whatever that means!)there are China & Hong Kong Simplified and Taiwan & Hong Kong Traditional. Hope that helps.

  • Strong misc presence is strong but won't go in for this deal since I got the HTC Legend deal a week or two ago

  • +1

Just my opinion… But the backflip is an absolutely terrible phone…

I suggest staying as far away as possible… I wouldn't go near one with a 10 foot pole.

Optus tried to make this, the Dext and the Quench big but failed miserably. I'm guessing no-one wanted them on contracts so they're flogging off remaining stock. Great price for what the phone is specs-wise, but it is a shocking phone. QWERTY keyboard is terrible quality and a pain to type on, screen is not all that responsive and phone is just all-round slow.

If you want an android phone on Optus pre-paid, do yourself a favor and fork out the extra $100 and get the Sony Ericsson X8. Great phone for the price IMO. Beats the backflip anyday…

  • -1

all motorolas are shit. bad experiences and wouldnt recommend them

    • any justification? just lamely shouting X is shit without any proof isnt really saying anything

      • uhh…the justification was "bad experience"

        • The only good Android phone the Motorola has produced is the Droid and its sucessor the Droid X.

All their low end offerings, Cliq, Backflip, Flipout etc. didn't get very good reviews.

        • defy?

  • +1

good deal this phones $550 on ebay LOL.

  • Pretty good deal considering the specs. Tempted to get it, but if its as sluggish and slow as some people have described it….hmm. If you've been using a fairly 'fast/normal speed' phone, the slowness will most likely bugg you a lot, unless youre extremely patient.

  • can i buy this from optus store?
