Alternative Carrier for MEL-LHR Upgrade to Business Class on Points

Mrs B and I are looking at travelling to London late May for 3-4 weeks.
We have about 500,000 QFF points between us, and we want to use them to upgrade to Business Class (long trip, bad back, all that).
Since we last did something like this the goalposts have moved on quite a bit. Now we have to consider Classic Upgrades, Bid Now Upgrades and even Tartar Control Upgrades.
It's a bit confusing, who can help with some advice to get the best bang for points?
Also, we are happy to look at OneWorld partner airlines, like BA, Emirates, Qatar (suggest others?)
Please advise, O Travel Gurus…

    Soccer and teeth airlines?

    • AFF also have a service called “Award flight assist” where they do all the work for you

Business class awards availability is pretty scarce departing aus. Consider getting a cheap flight to somewhere like Hong Kong and get awards flights from there with either emirates (through Dubai) or direct with Cathay.

    • Definitely, even a cheap flight to Singapore, KL, Colombo etc will halve the cost of the business fare to LHR

  • Rewards flight fees are a lot higher out of Singapore and KL. The fees out of Hong Kong are a lot cheaper.

  • You can't generally upgrade on other carriers, so QFF points will only allow QF upgrades, and even then you have low odds unless you paid for more than the cheapest fare.

Your best bet is booking outright, but if you are talking about May 2018 then I can't imagine you'd have any luck. You may be able to pay economy to SE Asia and then snag an award flight on a partner airline from there in business, but you really need to get moving. Needing 2 seats makes it even harder, unless you are willing to fly separately?

  • on a similar note, but not upgrading… I have BNE-ZRH (via PER) booked for later this year on Emirates (via QFF points) for 2 pax in business… in order to get this had to check availability every day leading up to, I think, 335 days before the dates of flights I wanted. You need to plan ahead to use those points..

fwiw return is MXP-BNE (via SYD) on Etihad booekd via Velocity points.

I suspect even for upgrading if you want to travel next month you have missed your window of opportunity…
