Scammed on Gumtree for $2000

Hi,

I have recently sold a $2000 JB Hi-Fi gift card to some person on Gumtree. He sent me the transaction receipt to me via SMS, and I sent them the gift card immediately.

I did not received funds after two days, and could not reach this guy via phone number anymore, and the number has been cancelled.
I have just called the Bendigo bank and apparently the account number on the receipt is a fake one.

I will try to ask JBHIFI to trace the use of gift card and see what happened, and then reach to the police.

I would appreciate very much if you guys could offer me any help.

Cheers.

Edit: Thank you all for the response and help. I have sent an email to JB about this situation, and hope they could at least provide me with the information of this guy. I went the local police, and apparently this was out of their normal job range. I have lodged the case to ACORN. However, since I only have his FAKE number, and maybe FAKE identity linked to this number, I am not sure how much I could get from them.

Anyway, a very painful lesson. Turn the page and move on.

Edit: JB refused to do anything for stolen cards, and they required police investigation to provide the information of the card user. I have got an email from ACORN asking me to provide the address of the person, which I do not have, so I submitted another case with his phone number. I could not find anywhere to upload any image evidence?

This is why I dont buy anything off gumtree. Unless paypal is involved don't do transactions. As much as people complain about them, theyre still your best bet in such situations. When I was in highschool, I purchased books (exam guides etc which at the time was all of my savings) on the site, Im yet to receive them 8+ years later.

You mean unless it's cash on pickup. Read other connects re PayPal no longer offering protection for Gumtree transactions

Gumtree is, and always has been, for face to face swaps for cash. That others use if for other trades doesn't validate that or make it safe….

  • I hope police take action when someone try use gift card. Jbhifi have video security camera. If police and jbhifi work together will be catchable guy but question is, will jb hifi help? Even you buy at online they can find home address. Just send email and prove your gift card was yours and let them know if you will not take action many others will be scammed so for as Good Samaritan we need catch those guys. Hope they do some work for you.

The buyer isn't the only scammer around. Gullible buyers who do things without thinking will be scammed by someone else. Education is what people need.

People need to protect themselves, rather than relying on others.

The police don't care, JB HiFi don't care, ACORN don't care and so on and so forth. This is the issue with all online crime, there is no-one to help you.

If your letterbox gets stolen however police will fall over themselves to take a report.

    Is this a real post?

Who keeps a $2000 JB gift card? Also why so careless with transactions

I think this a bait thread

      • Ah damn, I retract my statement

Now I just feel sorry for the OP

People gotta stop accepting bank transfer screenshots

    • if you read through the comments - OP states 4x $500 gift cards for a TV that he/she intended to purchase originally… don't be too quick to judge mate…we all make mistakes and if it were yourself or someone related / a friend, perhaps more empathy would be in play….

i KNOW for a fact there are so many Australians / people in Australia that have a good simple heart and are too "honest" for their own good and believe in others easily…. so it DOES happen unfortunately…

  • For people who care about their money and want to save every buck I'm surprised there are so many people on here who are really this careless.
