Ive been waiting a while now.. looking at spending $820. Anyone think its worth holding out for longer?

  • used ones sell for around 700-800 on a popular aussie forum.

Looks like it's been cheaper than $800, it should drop further once nVidia release their next series later this year.

This is like any long term consumable investment. If you plan to use it very often, then it may be worth it?

    • the GDDR6 memory will be 20 percent more expensive to manufacture than GDDR5. That said, the cost could trickle down to end-users

GTX 1080 uses a different, less power-efficient memory compared to the 1060/1070/1080ti, so the price hike it experienced was magnitudes smaller than the other cards. Recently there was a point in time where 1080s could be had for the same price as 1070s courtesy of mining demand. Sure Volta is on the horizon, but now is fairly reasonable time to upgrade if you don't want to wait a few months. Largely depends on the rest of your rig, what games/performance/hz/resolution you want to play and how patient you are.

  • Can probably buy some cheap ex-mining units (not a 1080, maybe a 1080ti) for cheap soon as mining is tapering off

  • Wait a bit more imo until new series drops

  • i did a benchmark on www.userbenchmark.com and it made me feel like i could wait another year at least.

Ive got regrets buying a gtx 980 (paid too much, otherwise its still a good card) and would spend under $600 next time for what i get out of a gfx card

Getting gtx x80 cards tends not to be worth it as the x60 or x70 from the next gen out perform or match it for 70% of the price. You do have to wait a generation (1-2 years) though.

      • yeah ill stick to the x70 series from now on. lotta bucks.

  • yeah hold out for just a bit more, the prices should start dropping hopefully, but also keep an eye out for second-hand ones and deals

  • I ended up getting an Aorus 1080 with rgb for $800 plus postage. Second hand isnst suitable because i used zippay. hopefully i dont regret it..
