Gaming Headset or Headphones + Mic?

I've been looking to get something preferably under $150.

So far, for headsets, it's either the hyperx cloud (not sure which variant yet),or the audio technica pg1.

On the other hand, I was also looking at the audio technica M30X and getting a decent enough mic.

People have recommended a zalman but only PC Case gear sells them in Australia where it comes to $30. There are probably better mics in that price range though.

  • Depends on what games you play. If you like playing competitively then get a gaming headset as the mic would be in a better position for communication. I personally just use a 5.1 speaker configuration and an old guitar hero mic. Works fine and sounds amazing as it was developed by Logitech.

  • Proper headphone plus a detachable mike is the best way to go. Any reputable headset like the ATH-50 + a modmic. The modmic will attach and be in the same position as the one on a gaming headset. The hyperx cloud is a good one and had really good reviews

Steer away from "gaming headsets"as much as you can. A lot of the price is in the marketing, and the features are trash at that price level. If any headset says there are 7 speakers in each ear, for 7.1 surround sound, it means that each speaker is 1/7th the price and quality of normal one.

    • I just found something called minimic which works similar to modmic. It's much cheaper compared to modmic in Australia and also attaches to the headphone cup.

Have you had any experience with the M30X and know if it's good for games?

    • I actually just use a lapel mic, one that I bought very cheaply from Zapals. It cost me 47 cents

Used for both video conferencing, Hangouts and online games.

  • I’ve also heard that the hyperx clouds are a good deal :)

I have both a modmic 4.0, pair of $300 turtle beaches & a pair of Sennheiser Game ones.

My go-to would be the Game ones. I’m not a fan of the wire mess that comes with the modmic & the mic + audio quality is sensational. The auto mute when you raise the mic up is also a nice touch that I use frequently. Audio quality is good with many people saying that its a tweaked HD558. It blows the turtle beaches out of the water.

  • Any recommendation on Razer?

  • I use the Steelseries Arctis 7 which have been awesome so far, might be marginally over your budget, ask for a deal in JB and they give you a decent discount off the marked price
