Sony DSC-RX100 III Cyber-shot Camera

I'm going overseas in a couple weeks and want a nice easy to use travel camera to bring with me to take some happy snaps. I've settled on the Sony DSC-RX100 III Cyber-shot Camera (open to other ideas at similar prices).

The questions I to put to OzBargain is:

Do I buy from a local store such as (JBhifi, TEDS ect), to take advantage of Aus based warranty. Approx $800

Do I buy off a website that imports their good from Hong Kong/ China, where there is no Aus based warranty? Approx $650

*I'm heading overseas in a few weeks so would I be able to claim the 10% Tax refund Scheme at customs on both of my options?

Any advice is appreciated!

Store needs an ABN to claim TRS. See quote taken from homeaffairs.gov.au

your purchases are from a single business with the same Australian business number (ABN) and total AUD 300 (GST inclusive) or more. For example, if you bought items from one business, even on separate invoices, that together total AUD 300, these items could be eligible for a tax refund under the TRS

I have this camera. Bought it locally at a bricks and mortar store (DigiDirect) and pricematched whatever was the cheapest (locally) when you search staticice.com.au

Also, suggest getting one of these grips too. Makes the RX100 easier to hold when taking photos.

And if you're taking video, make sure you get a Class 10 SD card at the least. Check out PCByte as they're way cheaper than camera stores or JB HiFi.

More important than write speed, make sure you get a 64gb plus card. Sony has a stupid software limitation where you cannot record with XAVCS, which gives you the highest bit rate and best quality (50mbps vs 28mbps with AVCHD) for video unless you have a SEC (64gb+) card.

The price of rx100 m3 seems high atm (I got mine for 727 when digidirect had 15% off sony). If you are willing to spend that much already, perhaps consider the seconds rx100 m5 for a tad over $900 from their ebay store which comes with 12 months warranty from Sony. The main advantage is a far better autofocus and better video capabilities (4k and 960fps super slow mo) and slightly better low light performance but the chassis and the lens is the same as the m3.

Yeah I got my m3 for $700 including a case and a $30 Sony store voucher. Grabbed a second battery.
      Was so happy.

I agree with pushing to the Mk5 though.

For an extra ~$100 or so, you’re getting a camera that came out last year and not in 2015.

      • Do you know if the tax refund scheme applies to items bought from ebay? Is gst paid on ebay items? Thanks for all the replies so far!

as long as seller is gst registered business and provide you with tax invoice showing gst paid , else no.

Great little camera, think I got mine from DWI grey import, never had any issues.

I got a silicone case off ebay to protect it a bit while it's banging around in a bag or my pocket.

I posted rx100v for $1050 nov last year https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/344532. Nobody appreciated it at the time. Hasn't been a deal that good since. Australian stock, australian sony warranty.
