Sydney Trains Costing More during Trackwork?

Hi all

Wondering what your thoughts are on paying more to catch (multiple) trains during a trackwork?

Was surprised when my trip was counted as two "journeys" even though my tap-ons were within 60 minutes.

Below are the Opal off peak fares for my journey.

Typical:
* Strathfield to Westmead
* Total $3.01

Trackwork (Today):
* Strathfield to Olympic Park $2.42
* Olympic Park to Parramatta on Trackwork Bus
* Parramatta to Westmead $2.42
* Total $4.84

  • What are your thoughts OP?

  • ohhh must be hard using public transport

    • that's why the nsw government should spend more money on road infrastructure.

    I'm not aware of people tapping on/off a trackwork bus. Did you see anyone else doing it, or was it just you?

    Normally you should not tap on / off on buses that are replacing trains for trackwork.

  • Did the travel from Olympic Park to Parramatta on Trackwork Bus take more than an hour. It seems Opal considered Strathfield to Olympic Park as one trip and Parramatta to Westmead as an independent trip. This could be a bug in the Opal calculations.
    If you use the Opal app, you can contact them via the app and inform them of this additional charge and ask them to correct it.
    Usually they do correct the fares within 48-72 hours.

    I have contacted them couple of times when the bus tap offs were not successful and I was charged the default fare instead of my usual minimum fare. I received a refund from them within 48 hours of reaching out to them.

    Based on your provided figures, I estimate you paid $1.83 more than a typical journey.

    As this is less than a couple of bucks, I won't give it any thought at all.

    You may have to think for yourself.
