  • From the title I thought you were talking about property.

    • thanks - hopefully adding computer to the title will help.

  • But a 4770k and mobo

I don't think it is worth it. I resurrect older computers by going to linux. Big learning issue if you're used to having full control. It works if you're not into something that requires specialised software - for me it is photography so I still have a windows system. But for internet, email, watching movies on sbsondemand or youtube, playing music - it's great. I found sparky linux. At the desktop I'm using around 100mb ram. I say desktop, but it's openbox (I don't understand the difference, but it isn't a desktop). It seems to use around 35 - 50mb ram for each tab open on a browser; so my ancient 2gb system can run a fair bit. The cpu's on my old systems struggle with video - but they're over 10 years old, initially came with 1gb ram which I immediately upgraded when they were new. I did upgrade an old laptop though, maxxed out the ram to 2 gb and bought a 360gb ssd on recent sale. If the laptop dies I can keep ssd and the ram was $30 which is an OK gamble.

Likely will need ddr4 ram too.

If you just want to use it for basic tasks, you could go with a 2200G apu.

  • if you plan to use the imminent 20% ebay sale, you won't be able to use your ddr3 ram as all the pc sellers will just have ddr4 motherboards
8gb ddr4, new cpu and new mb maybe 300-600 depending on what cpu you want
case, maybe 50-100 on top of that
you'd also have to put all those components together, so if you're not comfortable with that, it might be more convenient for a second-hand system
depends on your needs too, if you game a lot, or just surf ozbargain and the web
    apologies for messy sentences

  • Thanks for the replies.

Decided the best option is a new motherboard, CPU and DDR4 ram from MSY. Can get all these for $208 (for cheapest combination) which isn't too bad.
