New Optus "Unleashed" unlimited Mobile Data plan

Just read this recent article on Optus' new "Unleashed" unlimited mobile plan.

They claim that music and video streaming, downloads and tethering is capped at 1.5Mbps. I know Netflix requires a minimum of 3Mbps for SD streaming so it's definitely not suitable for those wanting to stream.
It's also only available to eligible Optus customers only

Its a great start however, just not fast enough for streaming purposes. Plenty of US telcos have unlimited data for $40/m with a 600kbps tethering cap (4.8mbps). Wonder what's taking so long for Aussie telcos. Looks like it may be another couple of years until we catch up.

What do you think?

  • Unlimited data on a mobile network is ridiculously expensive for a telco to provide, thats why you havent it seen it yet.

Won't be years, but more like 12-18months before you see more unlimited, espically with TPG

      HUH how?
the true is practically zero to provide data.

unlimited will lead to a big increase in usage and the strain on the network. without investment, you can still provide unlimited, but you will see speed and performance reduce heavily without more investment (increase capex), you cannot have high performance and unlimited, in that sense it is very expensive for telco to provide.

Why don't you search for the various other threads on this topic and see what OZB thinks?

  • It's difficult to say whether people would want an unlimited service, there's plenty of plans out there that offer adequate data with no restrictions to service speed.

  • They claim that music and video streaming, downloads and tethering is capped at 1.5Mbps.

Sounds like you'd just be just causing yourself frustration.

Not sure if you have seen this thread OP https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/364771
It also discusses some of the points you raise.
