Which Action Camera for Quad/Drone - 2018?

Hey guys. Trying to find a small/light action camera for a mini-quad.
Ideally below 100g, 60fps+ (don't care about resolution), wide dynamic range.
Budget around $100.

Most action cameras seem to be too large and heavy, or only record at 30fps.

The GoPro Session seems to have an ideal formfactor and features but its $200 which is a lot of money if it might get damaged.

Alternatives
- Runcam 2
- Mobius2
- Others which may or may not be in budget: Kaiser Baas x1; Xiaomi Yi; SJCam; Olfi One.Five; iSAW; Wimlus

Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with these cameras?

Cheers

  • I just bought the latest session. What a camera though. So convenient and compact. I used to have a JVC Addixion that I purchased to save pennies over a Gopro, but after buying the Gopro a few years later - just on the shear amount of aftermarket parts and mounts availability alone it is worth the extra money.

    • Yeah the other things I like about the Gopro Session is the built in waterproofing (no case needed!), 1080p/60fps and the aftermarket parts and 3D print designs available. Also seems to have great dynamic range compared to some of the competitors.
      But so much money :/

      • Worth it … dont forgrt stabilisation in the session 5

        • Yeah the stabilisation feature would be great. And it does 1080p/90fps. But at ~$310 its waaay over my budget :(

        • @tanksinatra:

If it helps I got mine for $285 JBhifi. I had to haggle though. lol

  • Which Drone? Plus why do you need 60fps and don't care about resolution what are you videoing?

    • Its a 220mm racing/freestyle quad. I'd like the high fps to play back acrobatics in slow motion.

      • Awesome then Runcam sprint would be the go.

  • For under $100 I would probably get the original Yi action camera - as an example Aliexpress has it for $68 USD. First review with footage that popped up on google. Might be able to find a better price somewhere (since it is fairly old)

If your aim is slow motion then the 720p/120fps and 480p/240fps would be the settings I would be most interested in.

    • Thanks for the tip. Had a look at the Yi lineup. I seem to be able to get the original Yi for $80 AUD delivered. Older product but has a bit of a community following. Also has some aftermarket scripts available and battery can be removed (powered from quad).
Then there's also the Yi Lite for about $115. Extra $25 gets a screen and EIS.
Then there's also the Yi 4k for about $200 that does 1080p/120fps. Seems to have the best price/performance ratio and looks to be the current darling in the action camera market. Unlike the GoPro session or Hero, none of these cameras are waterproof without a bulky case. Not that I really mind.
