iPad Repair or Toss Them?

Hello I’ve got two iPad Air purchased 2 years ago for work. I’m unsure what’s wrong with them but they are messing up. One is operational but turns off randomly every 5 or so minutes then comes back on and also always says 1% charged even though it’s more. The other just won’t turn on but was working fine a few days ago. Would it be the battery? If so, any idea of cost are a place to get them repaired? Thank you.

You can try and backup all the iPads and restore them in recovery mode. For the iPad that does not boot up try putting it in DFU Mode (Google it) This will wipe everything off the device.

You can also try replacing the battery. I've fixed several phones by replacing the battery. One of the phone was stuck in a boot loop and replacing helped it boot to the spring board.

    • Thanks I looked into this and apparently they are an “all in one” device which means to replace the battery the whole unit is replaced?

      • No. You should be able to replace just the battery. I've managed to replace my sisters iPad battery before. You just have to be careful not to burn the screen too much when using the heat gun and be careful not to crack the glass when lifting the display up.

Take them to a Genius Bar?

Restore via iTunes and if it won't let you then take it to an apple store. A friend's was frozen then it wouldn't them back on and he wasn't able to restore by iTunes because it told him the firmware was too low or whatever but it wouldn't let him update either. The apple store fixed it free of charge. It was way out of warranty.

Thanks a lot for this I’ll give I a go, glad there’s some hope!

if still under warranty - go to Apple

if not - I can recommend you a good private technician to look at it.

If they are less than 2 years have a crack taking them to Apple for a warranty repair. Even if they are a bit older just take them anyway to Apple when it is busy and have a try.

One does not simply toss an iPad.
    1. Would try factory resetting by putting into recovery mode (this worked when my iPhone was displaying incorrect battery percentages).
    If that doesn't fix it.
    2. Would take to Apple see what they say.
If they given an unreasonably high repair cost.
    3. Would check with other repair places for a quote.
If again it comes out not being worth it.
    4. Would sell them for parts. (People will buy them especially if screen is in good condition).

They make for good chopping boards in the kitchen.
Glass doesn't trap bacteria the way plastic and wooden boards do, its the healthy way to cook.

I have feeling that it may have something to do with the charger and cables you use.

    • +1

Yes this is a good starting point to check first.

    • This is interesting, how can this impact the device? I only use the charger is came with however sometimes I’ll put it on a phone charger that is the smaller block? Do the generic cords damage the device?

If the cable is faulty, it might not be charging correctly. As you say it works but shows only 1%. That might indicate that its chargibg very slowly - the power isnt getting thru from the charger. Given both units are playing up, that might just well be the case.

See if you can borrow another charger and cable and see if that improves things for you.

        • Okay, thanks for that - the iPads are used for different things so one is only charged at work on a different charger. I don’t think it’s the cord but I might get a new cable anyway just in case. Thanks

Take them to the apple store, they will most likely fix them for free (even if out of warranty) if it is an easy fix. I've taken iphones there that I thought were 100% dead and they have fixed them for free while not under warranty.

    • Thanks I’ll try that

  • Have Apple diagnose the problem first. If they can't fix or if it's expensive, perhaps sell it to Mobile Monster (they still pay decent money for iPad Airs unless it's a 'software issue').

I've had a plethora of iPad Airs batteries failing literally just after the warranty expires.

At first Apple was replacing them free of charge, but after a while, they started telling me I need to pay full price to replace. I stood my ground and ultimately there was a compromise, I would pay $140 get get a new device ($140 is the cost of a new battery)

I suspect Apple realises there is a fundamental flaw in the battery or battery management controller of the iPad Airs, but isn't willing to claim culpability

    therefore
    * Ask for a replacement free of charge
    failing that
    * Demand they replace the iPad at the cost of a new battery.

    • Thanks a lot, who should I go to? Just an Apple store? It’s so bizarre they both stopped working at exactly the same time and they had different amounts of use.

Just go to the Apple store, it's still covered under ACL

thanks very much, I’m in Tas so unsure of stores here but often in Melbourne working so I’ll go in next week. Thank you

  • Let me know if you would like to sell them.

    • Okay I really don’t want to sell them if I can possibly get them fixed but if this isn’t an option I’ll contact You.
