Advice for Best Protein Powder

Hi all,

I am relatively new to working out, and i am trying to get more protein into my diet and I thought Protein supplements would help.
What is the best type of protein powder? Whey Protein Concentrate? Whey Protein Isolate?
What is the best brand?
What is a good price to be buying protein powder at?
Where are the best deals for protein powder? Online? In-store?
What flavors are the best?
Buy in bulk or small packages?
When is drinking powder most effective?

Thanks for your help,

    1. WPI is "better" than WPC because it has more protein, less fats and carbs and less fillers per gram than WPC. That being said, as you are just starting out it really doesn't make that much of a difference so I would suggest going for WPC as it is the cheaper of the two.
    2. Optimum Nutrition is probably the most popular but is more on the expensive side. You can get similar products for cheaper from local Australian companies such as Bulk Nutrients.
    3. WPC is around $25-$30 per kg and WPI $35-$40 per kg
    4. Online is definitely on average cheaper than in store. I find the employees in store tend to try to sell you unnecessary products, especially newbies. Personally, I would stick to whey protein, creatine monohydrate, fish oil and maybe a multivitamin.
    5. Entirely up to personal preference.
    6. Definitely buy in bulk, it comes out cheaper per kg
    7. Protein timing doesn't matter, as long as you get it in your system before you go to bed. If you want to get more serious, you should definitely have a look into macro nutrients
    • Great help thanks. What flavor do you use?

      • +2

Personally I stick to the og flavours. Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry ftw!

        • Vanilla WPI from BNA

I recommend Bulk Nutrients for price and taste. If you purchase WPC, it's so cheap!!!
      Coffee flavour is my favourite.
If you feel like going against your natural OzBargain instincts try the Cola flavour. It's ridiculously very similar to Cola in taste.

      • I think their flavours are subpar in comparison to some good name brands.

Honestly have been working out for about a year now. I pretty much buy anything that is on sale and says fat burn on the front. I don't pay any more attention than that. They all seem to make you fart an equivalent amount, and they all seem to make you recover quick if there is any measure to that. But then again my goal isn't to look like a ribbed cardboard box, just want to maintain my weight and not have my body hurt too much. I just buy whatever is available at the chemist or woollies, as there is a certain element of trust that they would stock something semi reputable.

So you literally have nfi what you are putting into your body. Good luck with that.

What is the best type of protein powder? Whey Protein Concentrate? Whey Protein Isolate?

Depends. I'm lactose intolerant, so I need to use something that is lactose free. Currently, I'm using a hemp protein powder.

    My go-to sites are:

    https://www.bulknutrients.com.au/
    https://www.bulkpowders.com.au/

    What is the best brand?

Very subjective. Everyone and brand is different, you need to try and see. I started with Dymatize ISO-100, but found it expensive after a while. Then went to Muscle Pharm Kombat (if I remember correctly). It took my stomach a while to adjust and eventually ditched this and started to buy from Bulk Nutrients (https://www.bulknutrients.com.au/products/protein-matrix.htm…). I then decided I didn't want to put alot of artificial stuff in my body that I can't even pronounce so I then moved to hemp powder.

What is a good price to be buying protein powder at?

The hemp powder I buy is around $33 per KG. There's a plethora of powders out there, you just need to try it for yourself and see what works for you.

Where are the best deals for protein powder? Online? In-store?

I used to buy from in-store but found that online pricing is generally cheaper and you don't have to go into a store.

    What flavors are the best?

Everyone's palette and brand is different, you just need to try and see for yourself. Dymatize ISO-100, I like Double Choc. Bulk Protein: Honeycomb; Choc are good. Hemp protein is only available in raw, so I blend it with a banana, milk, weet bix, chia seeds, frozen berries and sometimes a dash of honey.

Buy in bulk or small packages?

If you're new, start with small packages so you don't end up with a bucket of powder. Once you know what you like, buy in bulk. I also switch brands and alternate because your body can get used to it. Like with exercises, if you do the same thing over and over again, your body gets used to it and you won't see the gains. That's my theory anyway.

When is drinking powder most effective?

I usually drink it within 30 minutes after a workout.

Hope that helps, all of the above works for me and I'm sure everyone has their own take or view so you need to find what works for you.

I used Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard for a long time. (I was not aware but they seem to have changed the formula, causing conflictual opinions). I used to buy the double rich chocolate, which was good.

Anyway, last year I decided to buy a WPI (isolated) and tried Horley Ice (Vanilla), which is amazing. That's more expensive, but if you want WPI and a nice flavour that's your best bet, from my point of view (that's obviously my point of view, but some people have been fighting about whey protein these days, so I want to make it clear).

Today, I became aware that Horleys is also changing the composition. I am not sure what they are doing if that is going to be good or not. I've ordered the 3Kg today and was informed that they are changing to 2.5Kg but keeping the same servings, which doesn't make a lot of sense so I will wait and compare the labels.

I've tried some disgusting whey proteins whose names I forgot. Some people argue that flavour is not a big deal because you can drink the shake in less than a minute. For me, the flavour is important, the reason why I am staying with Horleys (obviously waiting to see what they have changed and why).

I buy from whoever offers it cheaper, usually eBay and some other websites, always using coupons. If you go to websites, always check reviews because scam is everywhere.

    • Just updating regarding Horleys, I got an email explaining the changes I previously mentioned in case someone is interested:

      EMAIL:
Thanks for your email. For the record, while we have made some formulation changes to other products in our range, ICE WPI remains largely unchanged.

We recently updated our Elite range of proteins with a new look and have made some other changes at the same time. ICE Whey is now Elite ICE WPI. It’s the basically the same formulation as before (we have tweaked the flavours slightly) but we changed the serve size down to 30g as research shows that the body prefers smaller serves of protein spread out over the day (20-30g per serve) and this dosing has the best outcomes for utilisation – for muscle building as well as normal body processes. We don’t believe you should waste protein (or money) if you don’t need to. You are welcome to increase your serve size if you choose though. If you go with a 36g serve just take the 100g total of the new formulation and multiply it by 36% (I did this for the protein: 90.3g x 36% = 32.5g).

We have changed up the sizing as part of the range review and this is to help us stay competitive.

We believe ICE WPI is still the best protein you can buy with the highest percentage of protein and the BCAAs essential for muscle building compared to similar products from other brands. We hope you continue to enjoy ICE WPI.

We hope this helps, don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any more questions.
      END OF EMAIL

I don't think it makes a difference if you are getting protein from normal sources that are better for you such as red meat.

Unless you believe people who fart a lot and believe that protein causes "fat burning".

IMO you can achieve good results by adding more plant based(quinoa, buckwheat, legumes etc) and moderate animal based protein in your diet rather than buying 'you don't know what is in it' type products. If you must, stick to Australian brands.

I usually go the Bulk Nutrients WPC or Earth Protein.

In the interest of bargain hunting, I've had a lot of luck lately finding people selling protein powder on Gumtree. Often it's people who have bought a flavour and not liked the taste so they'll sell it off fairly cheap to get rid of it.
