Where to Hide Spare Keys to Avoid Getting Locked out?

As above, what's the best place to hide spare keys to avoid locking yourself out from home.

  • I keep a key to the internal garage door in the garage and can trigger the garage door with my phone(over wifi if internets down). Doesn't help if the powers out though lol

In your backyard. It's got a long rock wall with a big oak tree at the north end. It's like something out of a Robert Frost poem. It's where I asked my wife to marry me. We went there for a picnic and made love under that oak and I asked and she said yes. Promise me, phunkydude. If you ever get locked out… find that spot. At the base of that wall, you'll find a rock that has no earthly business in a Maine hayfield. Piece of black, volcanic glass. There's something buried under it I want you to have. Your spare house key.

    • But what if you hadn't made it?

If you're lucky enough to live near a trusted friend, hide your keys at one another's places (in a combination-lock keysafe, under a rock, under the doormat, whatever). If someone finds "your" keys, they'll also discover that the keys don't fit the locks. If you lock yourself out, you only have to visit your friend, and it won't even matter if they're not home.

    i agree with Djmm
Rectum is the answer. Or if you have a trusted friend living near by… inside their rectum, and you could keep theirs safe inside yours. If you don't know your neighbors well, now might be the time to introduce yourself then by say .. Xmas you could ask nicely over some very strong egg nog ..

  • Nest X Yale door lock. Door opens via fingerprint resistant key code or mobile phone. If you also get a Nest Security System it will automatically deactivate it when the door is unlocked. No need to worry about lost keys. Pair it with a Nest Hello doorbell so you get a mobile alert as soon as someone walks up to your door (doesn't need to press the doorbell)

Note - Some of this stuff needs to be imported from the US as it's not for sale here. The support is really good even without being in the same country.

Here's a novel idea. Figure it out yourself based on the unique places around your house. Seriously wtf happened to people these days. 0.00005% brain usage

OP needs to send us a photo to examine.

    • although, this thread is a good way of eliminating the usual places that a thief is likely to look. Anywhere mentioned here is off the list (except maybe the cat or the bin full of keys)

  • My partner has a spare set, but friends used to hang their key on a nail on the trunk of a tree. Old key, so it didn't shine. Not too nice when there was a spider, though!

Replace the Lock with fingerprint type

  • Try 24/7 Parcel Locker by Aus Post located nearby.

    • How would that work? Someone’s sure to take the key when they collect their parcels…. not only that, but you’re not going to be able to get into the specific parcel locker even if there were a parcel for you.. luck of the draw which one it is….

      • Similar to something shown in movies, use small tape to stick the key inside locker ceiling…may be…

        • Or just like people carry Opal on mobile cover a spare key if you carry mobile all the time…

Or if you have car keys with you all the time, a spare key tagged to it..

Hibernating now…that's all I could think of other than dropping the key inside some closed areas(bush..rocky wall..woods) around home which only you can recognize…

  • I bought a lock picking kit from here a little while ago. Once it arrives, I'm hoping it'll be adequate

Where are you going to hide it?

      • I'm going to make a garden ornament which has the parts as and and legs.

Maybe a styrofoam snowman with lockpick arms.

I like to think that someone who can pick locks isn't not bringing their own if trying to break into my house 🏠

  • Why not keep your spare keys at a local friend or family member's house. Then if you lock yourself out, you only have to go visit them to get yourself out of the poop.

keep your spare key in your under neighbor's mat

  • Hide it under the pot plant next to the entrance of your door or under your 'Welcome' mat.

    I don't know what your living accommodation is like but when I lived on my own in an apartment complex I did the following;

    1. I taped a spare key (of my apartment) to my mountain bike, right under the frame, and I taped it pretty tight to make sure it wouldn't fall off while I rode. I checked it every time I came back from biking. I used electrical tape, similar colour to the bottle holder so it didn't look out of place and just seemed like I have secured the bottle holder tighter. I used to secure my bike inside the apartment building behind the underground stairs so it was out of sight. The key was only to my apartment and not the door to the apartment building as the bike was inside. (I never got locked outside my building but some of my neighbours did and you could just ring someone and tell them to unlock the door).

    2. In the underground car park (not sure if you have one). I went to one of the guest parking area's and taped a key to one of the water pipes, one side of it was facing the wall and that's the side I choose. And once again I used electrical tape that's similar to the pipes colour. The pipe was out of sight and even if you went and looked at it, it just seemed like some one had taped to secure it better.

I also considered taping a key somewhere in the garbage room, but never did.

Just look for places that are out of sight and can be accessed by you easily.

    Hope that helps.

pretty good advice - might try duplicating the mailbox key and tape it to one of the water pipes in the carpark or the fire extinguisher/hydrant cabinets. Inside the mailbox will contain the apartment key. Problem solved!

      • Yea glad to help, worked well for me, hope it does for you too and the mailbox setup is even better!

    Stay at home.

  • After I locked myself out with a 2 year old inside the house my husband installed one of those fingerprint door handles.

  • Have a spare key with a cousin who lives 10 minutes away. But also have one hidden in my storage in the basement which has a combination lock.

    suppository

  • get one of those key safes. put the thing in plain sight. nobody is going to try and break the thing open if they can be clearly seen while doing it.

  • Are you trying to break into someone's house?

  • Does your door mat have a black base? Stick the key on with black gaffer tape.

Hide somewhere not near your home. In that case if someone found it, no one knows what's key it is. Find a good spot within walking distance or within driving distance, etc. Plenty of spots. Make sure you hide multiple keys not only one, in case if you lose it.

  • Leave your house keys under your neighbour's doormat.

  • Wear a gameboy shoe - and place it in the battery compartment of the gameboy.

You never leave the house without your gameboy shoes!

  • Mine is in a combination key holder mounted on outer brick wall in rear lane on my garage.

For front gate etc I have similar combination version that has aloop to hang on door knob or on gate itself.

    Never had issues

    see Bunnings

  • I hide mine on my pockets!

  • Old pair of jeans permanently on the clothes line.

  • I have a spare set at friends place. they are a 10 minute walk from my place.

  • On the collar of your pig hunting dog

  • Get a loyalty card, they are free. Cut key shape out, put key into card then insert into wallet.

Just don't lose your wallet lol.

Trick 2, get a zip lock bag. Bag the key then bury 10-15cm under the ground next to the entry, the grass or mulch will hide it.

I also know a guy who cut above the doorframe with one of them renovator tools to be able to insert a key above the jam.

  • At work. At least you know the robber straight away if got robbed.

  • Letterbox locked with a combination lock.
