Optus $50 for 50GB & iPad - Should I Keep The Plan and Sell The iPad?

Hi guys

So a family member has moved into a retirement village with no wifi…which means I need to find some other alternative to keep them entertained and connected. They watch YouTube a lot and burn through close to 2GB of data a day. They're currently on a Vodafone 10GB prepaid SIM but the data's fast running out. Originally I thought 10GB should last them a month, but I was terribly wrong. ..
I'm eyeing the 50GB for $50pm SIM-only mobile broadband plan here which is as you go, but then I noticed that this 24 month plan is available for the same price but comes with a free iPad. Note that they already have new android 4G tablets, which they're already used to, so are unlikely to need another replacement.
In a bit of a dilemma here:
Should I get sign them up for the iPad deal and then try to sell the iPad which they won't need?
Or should I just go for the month to month plan for flexibility and forgoe the iPad?
Is it possible to sell an unused iPad from a monthly plan?
Or are there any other cost effective options to get 50GB+ of data a month, from any provider/method?

Interested to know what you guys think.

Thanks

  • Which Telco are you with?

Telstra and many other Telco's have data share.

If you're with Telstra they have a $5 data SIM that uses your pool and actually adds 10GB (at least it did for me).

    • I'm with Kogan for mobile and Telstra Bigpond for broadband!

      • If by some miracle there's a Telstra Air hotspot around they could use that (which just utilises your home internet quote). Unlikely though.

  • Vividwireless does $70 pm for 200gb data, or $90 for unlimited data. They are using Optus network, so shouldn't be a problem.

    • I think anything costing over $50 a month is a bit too much for them unfortunately, being a pensioner.

  • Can you transition them to Netflix and they can get free streaming on their tablet?
And if they have a phone line (likely, old people like landlines), can you investigate getting them ADSL?

    • Good suggestions. Netflix does not have sufficient ethnic content unfortunately. They use both YouTube & streaming from foreign language sites. There is a phone line but it's fixed/linked to an emergency phone which can't be removed.
They're renting in a retirement village so I doubt we are allowed to get any works done.

  • 2GB a day meaning you need at least 60GB a day - if you go with optus 50GB you will still need to pay the additional 10GB, which works out to be $100 extra per month (unless they stream even more). I would have gone for the 200GB to be safe for $20 extra (less than $1 a day).

By the way, i went with the ipad plan and sold my ipad for $600 bucks last year (obviously i think now this would be less) - so effectively works out to be around $50 a month for my 100GB plan.

    • That's true but their budget is quite limited.
I was also thinking of getting them the $70 plan but telling them it's $35 and subsidise the rest myself, but they'll probably want direct debit so it might not work. Their budget was around $35-40pm initially but now we've realised their usage is much higher. They used to live with me and I have unlimited ADSL so we've never really tracked usage.

Edit: Great thanks for letting me know! I was wondering if anyone had sold one before and if there were any restrictions because I assume you won't have a proof of purchase since it came from a plan. Did you sell off gumtree or something like that?

      • +1

Yup, i used gumtree and sold it on a cash on delivery basis. I shown him the contract as a proof of purchase, and i think i also receive an invoice from optus for the ipad.

Just arrange the direct debit on your own card / bank and problem solved.

  • moved into a retirement village with no wifi

When you say "wifi", I'm assuming you mean "internet"?

I know that some older people are not tech-savvy, but others will be and having no Wi-Fi at a retirement home sounds so backwards!

    • Yep it certainly is! From what I've gathered, some of the other residents are also using mobile broadband but they only get/use 10-15GB a month, which is a lot cheaper. Having to explain to my nana that she will be paying more than her friends is going to be a bit of a pain :(

      • Those bloody tightarses! For the amount of money that retirement villages charge, one would expect that the bare basics are included! Next, there's no doors! lol

  • What about Vivid Wireless?

Or if you can find one, one of those unlimited Optus sims that cost $2 a day to use?

    • $2 a day is $60 a month, how is that better than the $50 for 50GB or $70 for 200GB offered by Optus that comes with a tablet? Is there any advantage to choosing Vivid wireless when Optus is the same price?

      • +1

Vivid Wireless offers an unlimited plan, and the old $2 a day Optus sims are also unlimited. If you sign up to a plan and they go over, you're looking at some severe bill shock ($10 per GB or part thereof). If you went for the 200GB/$70 on vivid, from the looks of things they don't charge you when you run out, and instead you can manually add 10gb for $10, a lot better than the automatic "convenient" top up of $10/1gb on optus.
If you're quite sure they won't go over, then $70/200gb with an iPad is of course better.
Better to know all your options for an informed decision

Edit: just thought of something else. Do any other residents want access to the net? If some neighbours can reach the WiFi signal on vivid maybe they can pitch in on the bill and share. Or if you are clever at networking maybe you can run some cables around and connect a router at the neighbours place in order to share the net.
