Moving in 2019 for a New Career. Opinions?

Hey all.

I've been working the last 2 years with the NT Government on an Undergraduate contract straight out of University. I graduated with an honours degree in Commerce (majoring in Management and Marketing).

I have large aspirations for a career in Marketing and am eager to relocate and make the move. I am passionate about the industry and have been doing a lot of social media marketing for local companies and clubs.

I've always been savvy with my money and have quite a bit of savings to take with me.

I'm thinking so far:

Melbourne, Adelaide or Brisbane.

Thoughts/ suggestions anyone?

    Egypt?

  • Just checking that you have no aspirations to start a family in the next 5 years. That may influence your decision.

    • 2 year out of uni… Yeah nah.

I can’t see that Adelaide would have a deep enough labour market. Go for Melbourne or Brisbane. I’m from Melbourne so I would definitely recommend Melbourne first.

You seem to have a good attitude. Go for it. Aim big when you change jobs, it will have big benefits to your lifetime earnings.

    • Thank you so much :) I definitely do have a great attitude towards it all and I am aiming big, but with realism!

  • go melb if don't plan to buy a place

  • Brisbane if you don't want to be raped on property prices.

  • Canberra, loads of public service jobs, which you already have experience in

apply for everything and move to where the job actually is.

You are looking at a chicken and egg situation. It depends where you can get a job and where you want to live. If you don't get many offers you go where the jobs are if you get a lot of offers you go where the best job is and/or what lifestyle you want to lead.

    My suggestion is:
    a) Research the companies out there, find out what they do and work out if you want a job there then try to find a way to connect with the company to get a job. Social media might help you here.
    b) List what you are looking for in a lifestyle and align this with the various Australian cities. I live in Melbourne and love it, but I'm sure people in other Australian cities will tell you the same thing. Every city has strengths and weaknesses and there are plenty of sites that will list each.
    c) Get yourself a concise resume to list your achievements - make sure they are quanitifiable, e.g. "my social media work for this company improved sales by 50% in 6 months etc". Ensure all your cover letters are specific to the company and the job listed. Don't just run off something generic and attach it to each one.
    d) Networking is one of the best ways to find a job, use your social media, go to industry events, etc. Learn as much as you can.

best of luck with the search.

  • Thank you honestly and sincerely for all the help and suggestions thus far! Currently leaning towards Melbourne for the lifestyle and change in weather (Darwin is notorious for its beautifully hot conditions yearlong).

I'm definitely going to sit down later in the year, after my Summer vacation and apply for marketing jobs of interest until there are no more left!

  • Radelaide baby it's the next Sydney.. after Melbourne.. and then Brisbane.. and then.. etc etc which is why we love it.
