Want to Play PS4 Exclusives

I want to play the new God of War game but I don't have a PS4, there are many good PS4 exclusives so I thought I should buy one, but I already have a PC, Switch and Xbox one. Is it worth it to rent one? If I did would I have to buy the games myself? Or should I buy a new one and games and just sell it when I'm done with the games?

Thanks in advance

    Just play PC

      Can't play PS4 exclusives on PC :(

        • +11

I'm all about PC gaming but that's just silly. There are some truly excellent console exclusives that make owning a PS4 worthwhile.

@omgitzrick: I can confirm this: I'm a lifelong PC gamer and recently bought my first ever console PS4, one month ago. The exclusives are amazing and totally different to PC gaming.

You might as well complete your collection of current gen consoles and buy a PS4 ;)

  • Or wait a year or two until the PlayStation 5 is announced to see if it will finally support backwards compatibility.

    • +4

Honestly some of the prices of the standard PS4 that grace Ozbargain… wouldn't even bother waiting.

Why do you need backwards compatibility? If you want to play Console X games then get Console X. Never understood this.

If I wanted to play PS3 games, why wouldn't I just get a PS3 instead of demanding the PS4 is backwards compatible (which 600+ games are via PS Now).

      • I agree you don’t need BC but it is nice to have. A lot of people will trade in their old console but still like to play older classic games from time to time. Also, not everyone wants to have lots of consoles plugged in all the time, the ability to consolidate is good. I agree the OP is probably not interested in waiting that long!

      • Because then you would have to buy another console. Obviously paying for one item that does the work of two is better than paying for two seperate items.

In addition, it's a pain in the ass switching them out. I personally cbf most of the time. I just finished bloodborne and thought about paying demon souls - but I'm too lazy to plug the PS3 in, wouldnt it be much more convenient to just have the currently plugged in PS4 to play the fuking thing?

        • Obviously paying for one item that does the work of two is better than paying for two seperate items.

No, that is not obvious. Generally most things that do more than one item perform poorer than a dedicated item. Being too lazy to plug something in is not a valid excuse.

Adding PS3 capability into the PS4 would increase costs significantly due to the Cell processor and it's hardware requirements, heat output and possibly lifespan.

Consider having them both plugged in and ready so you just need to swap controllers and press the PS button to boot.

        • @Hybroid: Hmm I meant generally with all other things being equal. I understand the economics as to why it is not done - I think there are also issues with the design architecture - that makes it not possible.

I was saying, ideally having it fully functional on one device would be more convenient.

I have only have 3 HDMI slots, one for a laptop - one for the PS4 and one for the Wii U.
Ill make the swap back to the PS3 one day.

        • @Hybroid: It is obvious if running a XB1X. Many BC titles have been updated to 4K. Gears of War 3 looks pretty sweet on it. I also have a X360 that is no longer setup as there are 500 BC games now available for XB1. So one console can replace two.

Sure the PS3 situation is unique due to Cell. But I am sure if the PS5 supports BC, fan boys will be praising the feature. For now as it isn't supported it is stupid and not reqiured.

    Bloodborne
    Until Dawn
The Heavy Rain™ & BEYOND: Two Souls™ Remastered
    Horizon Zero Dawn
    Infamous: Second Son
    The Last Guardian

    • Also to add on ^ :)

      Ratchet and Clank
      Knack 1 & 2
      Gran Turismo Sport
      Infamous: First Light

    • Detroit: Become Human as well. Amazing game.

  • I think that if you have a good gaming PC, then you don't need an XBOX as most of the games are on both. I found this out the hard way and now want to sell my Xbox to get a PS4.

And lots of the games (especially if digital), I think you already own the PC version once you buy the xbox version or vice-versa.

I was in the same boat as you a while back considering whether or not to buy a PS4 in order to play the exclusives even though i already owned an Xbox One and Switch. I pulled the pin a few weeks ago on a PS4 Pro deal and couldn't be happier. There are so many great PS4 exclusives that in my opinion warrant the purchase of the system.

Here's the link to the thread with everyone's recommendations on the best PS4 exclusives: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/370973

Amen. Did the same thing myself. LOVE my Xbox and its controllers, and if a game is out for both platforms I'll always get Xbox (it's a One X so geneally better graphics). Having said that, very happy with my PS4 Pro and the exclusives it allows me to play - they're worth the cost of the console. Oh - and do yourself a favour and pick up a Nacom Revolution Pro 2 controller so that you don't have to use the ergonomic excrement that is the Dualshock 4.

  • Or should I buy a new one and games and just sell it when I'm done with the games?

I think most people do this. Where can u rent a PS4?

    • +1

My local library has games for 2 week loans. Can reserve them online and they normally get them in within a few days of release. Free.

      • +1

awesome, i should check out my local library too then. know anywhere you rent the actual PS4 console as well?

  • +1

just watch someone else play it on youtube or twitch, and play age of empires 2 if you need a thrill

    • I always thought it was crazy watching other people play games through these platforms. Was interested in Horizon Zero Dawn so watched someone start it on youtube .. 2 hours later I am still wanting to watch more!

    • +2

      Legit answer here.

PC Gamer, every time I see a PS/XB/Nintendo exclusive that interests me, I'll just watch Youtube/Twitch "Let's Play" vids until it's out of my system.
I then reinvest the $300 - $500 I've saved into my computer every 3-5 years.
      Rinse and repeat.

      • yep, the lets play, 3 reviews, 10 things about, and its out of the system.

  • +1

You already have a PC so you can already play xbox exclusives on there so sell the xbox and buy a PS4.
    This is what i do.
You will be able to play all the same games plus all the ps4 exclusives.

  • Grab a PS4 and a PS plus membership, you will have a catalogue of unplayed games to rival your steam account in no time. Not a PS4 exclusive, but it is console exclusive: Monster Hunter World .. play eet!

    • But I play that on my Xbox : thinking:

  • Iam in the same situation as you. I have an xbox and pc and wanting to play the masterpiece that is God of War. Dont get a lot of so well received and reviewed single players games after the shit game companies have been pulling. Iam going for a second hand console as PS4 prices are really inflated in my opinion. $400 for a standard PS4 is too high. And the $260 $230 deals for PS4 are rare.

    • Gumtree is your friend. Picked up my 1TB PS4 Pro on Gumtree for $350 a year ago - still happy with that price.

      • I have been. Unfortunately all of the prices are ridiculously high and start around $300. $200 range consoles either have problems or have been banned online

  • Bloodborne - (this game alone is worth it)
    Nier Automata (also PC)
    Yonder (also PC)

  • my advice would be buy 2nd hand PS4 for cheap from gumtree or something. With upcoming exclusives titles such as spiderman, days gone, the last of us.. it would be silly to just buy and resell after god of war. sony's studios at the moment are far superior in terms of quantity and quality compared to Xbox's in single player experiences.

  • I'm in a similar boat, and am thinking of trying PSNow when I get better internet… God of War isn't there now but may be in the future. At least, there's a fair bit out there now!

  • God of War is pretty tight.

    • +1

      That's putting it mildly

  • There are no good real time strategy games on PS4 so why.. unless you want to play PlanetSide 2 then I totally get ya.. Go for it buddy man.

  • No one said persona 5…

    • I would never say P5, I much preferred P4G.

      • P4G is personally my least favourite of the social sim persona games P3 had a better story and soundtrack while P5 had better gameplay and characters. P4 is still great but.
