Do people blame you when they don’t have enough funds to make a purchase? See this around my area a lot…

    • +11

      Card is declined

"You f&*cking tosser this is all your fault I have insufficient funds available to pay for the fuel I've just put in my vehicle"

      "…."

      • +1

        That’s the one

    • not exactly me but our eftpos machine!!

    • -2

Fahim/OP - I was going to PM you but your don't appear to be able to accepts PMs.
If you value your job, you should remove this post immediately otherwise you'll have Head Office and your RAM sniffing you out.
PM me if you want more info.

Why cant I use coles Egift cards?

    • i have asked this question many times but could not find any answer. Buying a coles-myer group gift card with your e-gift card is the best thing you can do to avoid such inconvenience.

  • +2

do you still work there? if so, you should probably remove the company name from your post and just put "service station"

    • +1

Thank you, I have removed it

      • +1

        Still says Coles express

  • +7

At night, I have to wait ages as the local station attendant is mostly in the toilet. What's going on in there and why's his face always red?

    • Because I think he has been in the big fridge where the drinks are displayed. It’s really loud and cold (red face)there and sometime you can’t hear it that well. Hence he is late I think, he was not sleeping, im sure.

  • +19

why is your fuel always without a doubt the most expensive and people still buy it?

    • +3

Wouldn’t that question better be directed at the customers?
It boggles my mind everytime people come in and complain about prices.
I mean, they choose to shop here..

    • +1

      BP more expensive at times

      • +1

With Caltex being more expensive than both of them.

        • +3

7-11 price lock to the rescue

    • because you get 4c off… obviously

      • +1

        and flybuys!

    • Most likely is due to:

      • Convenience: Maybe someone's low on fuel and the petrol station is just right there; or it's the closest one from home/work.
      • Brand: People have the mindset that big brands provide higher quality fuel, similarly the independents deliver inferior fuel (or mixed with water).
      • Not price-conscious: Not everyone is like us. There are many people out there who like to waste money and just don't care about the price.

This can apply to other big servos like Caltex and BP.

        • $0.80 coffees: which are slightly better tasting than 7-11
        • +4

The ones at 7-Eleven are free with the app. Free drinks always taste better!

        • -2

@ronnknee: seven eleven coffee is f&$ing disgusting

        • Wait coles express has $0.80 coffees? Where?

    • That’s because, yes you may pay more on fuel from other stores but on average our instore items are considerably less expensive compared to most other stores if not all. So if you buy instore items, overall you are paying similar. (Purely my thinking).

    • +2

      Fleet cards.

    • +1

Its a company car and they're not paying.

  • +7

What is your pay? What penalties do you receive? What discounts do you get?

    • +8

      Base pay just over $22
      Midnight to 5 am +30%
Sat mid day to Sunday +50%
      Other normal public holiday rate.

4 cents off on fuel & 5% store discount

      • Decent pay, that's good to know. I always thought petrol station employees were on like $12 / hour.

        • It's basic casual rate, minimum wage plus the 25% loading. It's actually really easy to earn in a lot of jobs

Doing event work is great to earn a bit of extra cash because they have to pay you for the training part and if you get weekend rates, easy $30 an hour and usually free entry to whatever event it is (good for the aust open or GP).

Under the events award a casual gets $50 an hour on public holidays too.

        • @freefall101: Yeah, when I was 18, I did event work for free drinks + free entry alone lol

  • +1

Are you legally obligated to tell customers Thank you, come again?

    • +1

We do, it is in our Traning but we are not legally obligated.

      • So you don't have to say anything.. what if you say something odd like thanks for coming?

    • +1

Why do I feel like shaking my head when I read that sentence out loud ?

  • How do you feel about the demerger?

  • +14

Why did your set up an AMA and then not answer any questions?

    • Market research, so they know what you want to know!

    • +1

It's an AMA, not AAQ. /s

    • Sorry!

  • +2

Are there are lots of people buying $10 20 rolls toliet paper to get extra 4 cents off?

    • Yes. We do sell a lot.

  • What are employee benefits at Coles Exp? I know one car wash 2 for $20 comes down to $12 but 2 for $30 doesn’t

Are their any more except 4c

    • 5% instore discount

  • +2

Stop trying to cross sell me at check out with 3 different services/products and just take my fuel payment, maybe that's why people do drive offs

    • +2

Its mostly because the store has a higher profit margin on the things inside the store, whereas the fuel is always a set profit. Its the same as when you walk into Harvey Norman and they try to sell you their extended warranty. If you dont need the product/services just politely decline, they attendant is just doing their job.

      • Higher profit margin that fuel?

        • It may surprise you to learn that most fuel stations make 2-5c a litre on fuel. Sure there's profit in the system, but the actual stations aren't where it's made.

Only about 30% of a petrol stations profit comes from selling the fuel. The remaining 70% is from all the stuff they sell you inside the shop. They'll make more on a couple of bottles of Coke than on the 40 litres of petrol.

        • @Gareth:

That is only true for a franchise.

    • +2

Unfortunately Im not in a position to change this but if enough of you complains im sure they will do something.

    • Oh, and all these years I thought they drove off because they were POS scum of the earth (profanity)!

  • +7

i like this ask me anything… he's living up to the title - we are all asking him stuff, but nowhere did he mention he would reply to anything…

  • +3

    OP, where did you go?

  • Answer the questions please I want to know

  • +12

OP is too busy trying to upsell chocolate and lollies.

  • Do employees get mad or annoyed if someone uses Giftpax vouchers but doesn't buy anything else?

    • Not at all.

    • What advantages do Giftpax vouchers have?

  • +5

Ask me anything … 'cause I'm not going to answer anything?

  • Where are the answers?

  • +1

    c'ole sex press.

    sounds crazy

  • The guy is probably at work….might explain why he hasn't been online since then…and or replying back to these questions…

    1. How often people drive off without paying for fuel?

    2. Do you every scan your FlyBuys card when the customer doesn't?

    3. Do you ever worry about an armed robbery?

    • +2
      1. DO happens Very often, sometimes times 3 a day, sometimes none for weeks, but very unpredictable.

      2. No I have never done it but I know some who lost their job for doing that.

      3. Yes I do but we get online refresher training every 6 months to deal with it.

  • RUOK?

  • do you have a frozen coke machine that is never working?

    • No issue with the one we have.

  • Merged from Ask Me Anything, I Work for a Popular Fuel Station (24X7). (Re-Post, Could Not Answer on My Last Post as I Was Sick as)

Hey guys, sorry I could not reply anyone to my last post. Apologies.. Please ask me here…

    • +1

What job would you rather be doing?

    • Have a degree in Accounting & Management but didn’t even got an interview call in 12+ months! So yaa… you know what I mean.

    • How do you time altering the pump price if there is a continuous stream of customers?

Are you working at the service station now as you are taking a while to answer questions?

      • No. I’m not working now. Even if you are, you are not allowed to use ur phone around the console area where customers can see you using ur phone.

      • Change the advertised price first, wait till pumps are stopped, change prices on pump via console. Ex "passionate expert" here. Gold dropping no stopping till the pumps go beep beep beep! Hahahaha

    • +1

The price changes 6 am every morning, takes about 5 mins (including the price board outside which has a control inside the console) which is a high priority, doesn’t matter how many customers we have in the line. There are usually 2 team members on duty so it’s not that inconvenient.

    • I Was Sick as

      Are you feeling better now?

      • +1

        Really well now, thank you.

        • -7

How many sick days did you use up?
Were you eating the complementary sandwiches?
Why is the price of fuel so high now?
When forget to charge people for cigs or fuel do you still call the cops?
What do you do when customers park in the air/water bay to wander around looking for a cure to the munchies?

    • Do you ever put the measuring sticks into the tanks and take readings? Looks kinda fun.

      • +3

In the old days of course yes, I got training for it but never done once in the last 5 years or so. Everything is automatic including fuel level reporting and delivery of fuel.

        • Cool. My regular servo must be out dated.

    • Have you ever been held up? Are drunks/druggies a problem on the night shift?

      • +2

In my store, never happened but 5 stores around me have been in 2015 i think and we were in high alart. Yes! Drug / intoxicated customers are a big problem but we deal with it just fine.

    • +1

what's the employee benefit? How much discount can you get for fuel?

      • +4

Hey. Hang on. Wait your turn. I'm asking the questions at the moment 😀

What's the employee benefit? How much discount do you get on fuel?

      • +4

We get 4 cents of a litre and 5% off at coles group but only in officeworks, target, kmart, liquorland, double points on flybuys. And some corporate discounts like hire car and virgin air etc..

    • I have noticed lately that Shell is generally more expensive than nearby stations in my area yet plenty of cars are always there.

Do many customers pay with shell card thus not caring?

What percentage of customers use their fly buy card with a purchase?

      • +1

There are always promotions on flybuys and you get points. You have no idea how crazy some customers are about points. I would say about 65% customers have flybuys. And people pay more for fuel but our in store products are quite cheap hense people buys a lot of groceries as well. Our 80 cents coffee, $2 milk n bread and everyday low price brings in a lot of customers. Yes there are a lot of customers with shell card.

    • Is there potential to move into new roles (eg store manager / area manager) with experience and showing potential or are you locked into your current role?

      • +1

Yes! For sure. But without a degree you can not become a part of the operations team. So with experience you can a manager!

        • But without a degree you can not become a part of the operations team.

How strict are they on this? Is there a specific rule or is that just a pattern that someone has noticed from past history? They'd be closing off jobs to quite a few people.

          • +1

@bobbified: To be in the operations, you need to go through a 2 year Traning program and a formal degree is the requirement. So as far as i know they are very strict.

    • +1

Has anyone ever put petrol in a diesel vehicle (or vice versa) while on your shift?

      • +2

        Yap! About 4-5 times!
