Which Banks Issue a Maestro Card

Hi ozb,
Does anyone know if any Australian banks still issue Maestro cards?

I've contacted a couple but they have all gone to Visa/Mastercard debit cards as their debit options. I'm about to head overseas to spend some time in a country that most widely accepts Maestros (without accepting the Visa/Mastercard equivalents).

I've got other zero international fee cards (thanks for the pointers in the past), but they are no good if I can't use them for regular EFTPOS purchases.

Thanks,

Frank

just curious, where are you going?

    • The Netherlands

      • Mastercard will work fine there.

        • Ok, so humor me and pretend the justification isn't important. I'm still chasing a maestro card.

        • @FrankReynolds: ANZ will issue you a Maestro card with tap and pay functionality. You just have to ask for an eftpos only card when signing up.

      • Used my 28 degrees last month. No problems at all.

  • ANZ.

  • CUA

    commbank might
    my oldies have them

but you realise mastercard own them?
so anywhere mastercard is accepted so i maestro…

    • They were my next stop. I had an old maestro debit with Commbank a way back, but wasn't sure if they still offered one. I'll post back when I find out.

that most widely accepts Maestros (without accepting the Visa/Mastercard equivalents).

I can't think of a single place where that may be the case. Where are you talking about?

Every Mastercard debit card will be able to be used on Maestro.

  • Maestro is Spanish for Master
    Maestro is european MasterCard debit

    • Unfortunately that's a bit of an over simplification.
Maestro (and Cirrus) were the old EFTPOS debit cards before Visa and Mastercard jumped on the debit card train.

  • My regular Commonwealth Keycard has Cirrus and Maestro.

  • Maestro is on my commbank keycard as in just the eftpos card… I think it’s the network master card works on.

I’m sure this has been asked before. If they take maestro they’ll take your Citibank debit card.

    Where are you going ?

  • Interesting, are you going to Venezuela?

    • Not this time. Netherlands mostly.

  • Commonwealth Bank's Keycard has a Maestro element. Can someone explain the difference between Maestro & EFTPOS to me?

    • Not sure what the reason was. We could use our Australian cards to withdraw money from ATMs no probs, but when paying EFTPOS Maestro was the order of the day.

      • When you say EFTPOS, do you mean chip+pin and contactless payments? If so then visa and mastercard credit/debit cards work perfectly fine everywhere in Netherlands and EU. Maestro has been phased out for some years in favour of Visa Debit by most banks.

You seem insistent on finding one which is fine, but incorrect in assuming other cards don't work just the same. The standard ANZ Visa Debit Card I have would work absolutely everywhere in the Netherlands.

Maestro is like an overseas version of Eftpos.

RAMS Action account debit card has Cirrus/Maestro. Also has no overseas fees.

    • Thanks for the tip. This looks the goods.

  • I was curious about this so ordered a Keycard from CBA. It arrived and this is my findings.

    Does have the Maestro symbol.

There was no info about Maestro with the paperwork with card. Did have info about Contactless chip payment.
    Keycard info page link

    From there:

    Access money, worldwide
Access your money anywhere Maestro® is accepted, that’s currently at over 15 million locations worldwide.

    Maestro Link

Which funnily, is in Dutch (Maybe double dutch?)

As a side note, I went to CBA and asked for a Keycard not a Mastercard debit card. Got asked if I wanted to make an appointment to have my banking reviewed, if I wanted a quote for car insurance, and asked three times if I wanted a Mastercard debit card.
