I don't often see RM Williams boots discounted. So if you're looking to spend half a grand on boots, this could make it worthwhile.

The theory is that a pair of RMs last a lifetime. Not personally tested.

If you don't like the idea of spending $400-500 on a pair of boots, you aren't required to say so by making pointless comments. These shoes meet a specific requirement that you can't really beat for the price. Find me a pair of (mostly) locally, hand made, whole cut, chelsea boots for less money than a pair of RM's and I'll eat my shoe.

I got 8 years of EVERY DAY wearing out of my last set of boots that were casual enough to wear to the shops and classy enough to pair with a suit. I wore them to work 5 days a week plus most weekends, so often it became part of my image. Please, someone beat that value for me.

      start chewing that leather

      • +1

Not sure but most of their shoes are made in china now, while RM Williams none chelsea boots are made in Romania.

      • +3

Baxter boots are mostly made in China, India and Vietnam https://www.theaustralian.com.au/business/business-spectator…

      • +1

I have owned both over the years. Baxters aren’t quite the same quality.
Current RMs have had the heel replaced a couple of time, they are about seven years old.
I am not sure this is that good a bargain though.

      • +1

They're not whole cut. You lose

      • These shoes are crap and Baxter's 'customer' service is pathetic. I had a pair with soles that snapped in half after 4 months and they told me to throw them out and no replacement was given or refund.

        • Same. My Baxter fell apart after 6 months and got told to shove it when I sent it in for warranty.

          Never again.

      • ha ha I guess you were wrong… baxters=sh*t

    • +10

FYI if you have 2 pairs of boots and rotate them they will last a lot longer than 2 x 1 pair of boots

      • -3

So if you have 2 pairs of boots they will last twice as long as 1 pair of boots…

        • +8

More than twice as long, leather shoes need time to rest. It's not recommended to wear 1 pair on 2 consecutive days.

        • @D-grey: Correct! Also add a pair of shoe trees (a pair with a proper heel, not the cheap ones with a small round ball shape) and they’ll not only last longer but will minimise creases and stop shoes pointing up at the end.

        • +1

@D-grey: fair enough! did not know that is actually a thing, I thought you were just taking the piss

        • @Your Friend:

The leather particularly on the inside needs time to air and dry out from the sweat etc.

Do yourself a fav our and search YT for videos about the shoe stores that Prince Charles, Prime Ministers, Billionaires visit in London and they will give you a lot of tips about shoe care and WHY.

        • -6

          @D-grey:

          What?

          Rest? Not recommended?

Seriously, will it hurt the delicate little flower's feelings if worn two days in a row?

Maybe I just don't move in the right leather shoe circles, but I have never heard anything like this in my life. I thought one of the great advantages of buying expensive quality leather footwear was that it was durable, and would last a lifetime. There is certainly a testimonial from a person earlier in this thread who wore his boots for seven years - every day!

I'm straining my deficient grey matter now trying to recall any such advice during my schooling years. Did my sage old grandmother say, "Now sonny, don't you go wearing your good leather school shoes on consecutive days."?

Or, on the first day at my first job, did the boss come up to me and say, "Laddie, make sure you don't wear those nice shiny Florsheims two days in a row."

Is this like new 21st century folk wisdom?

If I'm paying $400 for a pair of shoes, I'll want to wear them every day. And night. And to bed. And drink champers out of them like Daniel Ricciardo.

        • +4

@Roman Sandstorm: You can wear them every day, just that they will stretch and wear quicker. You can rev the sh1t out of your Ferrari and you will damage the engine, you can neglect maintenance on your private jet and eventually the engines will fail. It doesn't matter how much you spend on something, if you dont look after it eventually it will fail. If you maintain things properly they last longer.

        • -1

          @2ndeffort:

I appreciate your comment. However… you are responding to something I never said.

You are talking about maintenance and looking after things.

I was making a (sarcastic) observation regarding the comments about wearing leather shoes on consecutive days. I have never (before this) heard of this proscription.

        • +1

@Roman Sandstorm: The reason you would rotate your shoes is to (and apologies in advance for geeking out) reduce the 'Duty Cycle' of the device and extend the 'Mean Time Between Failure' (MTBF). The exact reason you rotate the shoes (wear different ones on consecutive days) is maintenance.

        • @2ndeffort:

That makes 'no sense' since 'the reason given' for the day off was to evaporate sweat and to stop the boot conforming to the shape of your foot using a shoe tree (???).

If you want to 'let the leather breathe' wipe your shoe out with a clean woolen sock every time you take it off to 'let it air'. If your shoe is wet in the morning you have problems with your house that are more important than buying a second pair of shoes.

The reason two pair people have shoes lasting forever is because they obviously treat their shoes better. If they will blow an extra ~$600 to by a second pair so their first can have days off, then they are obviously moisturising their leather properly too.

      • My colleague said his last pair last him 21 years. I think I'll be happy with that haha

      • I learned that the hard and fun way :) I now have 3 pairs and some shoe trees and expect them to last me a while.

    • +17

“It became part of my image”

So you’re that RM Williams shoe wearing guy that everyone is talking about?

      • +3

They all say “Look… here comes RM Tromboc!” =D

      • +1

We call him “brown shoes”. Every time you go to use the work toilet he’s in there with his boots sticking out.

      • No, just that when you wear them every day and your friends family and colleagues have gone through a pair every 6 months and I'm still wearing the same ones, it becomes a talking point. My brother now has a set and my father is currently on the hunt.

I'm sure if you love a hat and wear it every day you become the guy who wears a hat everywhere. Nobody actually cares though.

    • -1

Its a bargain forum…. people can comment about the price. You seem so defensive in your comment.

Wearing them everyday for 8 years? Sounds boring

      • +2

Sounds like he has more time to surf Ozbargain, while you think about which shoes to wear.

        • I dont think more time to surf ozbargain is a good thing.

Youre so right i have so much to think about choosing between my one pair of work shoes, two casual shoes and one pair off running shoes. I wonder so hard which one ill wear to work

      • People are totally allowed to comment on the price where relevant. Telling everyone about how they don't see personal value in a product is just wasting time. It is a genuine bargain for those who want to buy the product which is all that should matter on this particular post. If you want to discuss whether or not RMW are a good value boot, please go to the forums to do that, and anyone who wants to join in can follow.

        • -1

I thought the comments were for discussion about the deal. Just because you see value doesnt mean other people cant comment about them thinking the opposite. It doesnt really matter about it being a bargain for those who wanted it. How many times do we see posts where people bought just cuz it was cheap and dont really want or need the item?

"If you want to discuss whether or not RMW are a good value boot, please go to the forums to do that, and anyone who wants to join in can follow."

This post is about RMW boots so you should be able to discuss RMW boots here right? We are not here to just pat each other on the back. So why are you trying to tell me to discuss the boots elsewhere? Even in your post your discussing RMW boots but not even this specific model. By your logic you should make your own forum post….

        • @hadz:

This post is about RMW boots so you should be able to discuss RMW boots here right? We are not here to just pat each other on the back.

We're here to discuss the deal that OP posted.

        • @tromboc: exactly, you finally realised what I am saying

        • @hadz:

          whooooosh

        • @tromboc:is that some kind of secret sound rmw wearers make when they realise that they shouldnt be offended by other people not liking the idea of $500 shoes?

        • @hadz:

No that's the sound of you not understanding the topic of conversation. I think it has run it's course.

edit: there's also a difference between being offended and trying to keep the conversation on topic.

        • -1

@tromboc: obviously we can discuss if its good value but not if its bad value?

Stop trying to convince yourself of the profound value just because youve already splashed the cash on god knows how many pairs.

    • Where did you get them re-soled? Still haven't worn mine from the last sale but I have another pair with worn out leather soles I need to get fixed

      • I have a pair that is 20 years old and in pretty bad shape. I went into the RMW shop in Melb Central a fortnight ago and they told me to bring them in, only problem was the costs they were quoting for fixing the boots werent too far from the costs of some of the other boots I've listed below. The cost to get re-soled was over $220 and each set of elastic inserts was about $55 or so per boot so to get my skanky, stretched and toes kicked boots re-soled and elastic replaced would cost me about the same as what a new pair of Harold or Thomas Cook boots. Hmmmmm mulling this one over!

      • A cobbler up in Redcliffe who picked them up and dropped them off for me! (80km round trip)

    • Thomas Cook Trentham https://www.thomascook.com.au/wsm/index?page=product&Cate=ME… cheaper from Nungar trading or Harold Boots http://www.haroldbootstore.com.au/mens-elastic-sided-leather… also cheaper from Nungar trading and both cheaper than RM Williams. Not sure about Thomas Cook but Harold Boots have a section of their website describing how they make their boots here in Australia, they're just not as well known or marketed. Mate has a pair and loves them.

    • What sort of maintenance did wearing them for 8 years involve? You have to replace the soles right?

      • 1 set of soles and heels. I started with dynamic flex which lasted ~7yrs and the leather sole I replaced them with just for looks lasted 1 year. That's when I replaced them.

    • 400 bucks it too much for shoes.

      • -1

Why do you say that? I could buy a pair of Windsor Smith boots every 6 months at $100+ a pair, or I can buy a good pair of RM Williams which will last 5+ years.

      • -1

don't comment then and go back to wearing kmart shoes

        • +2

Lol I can buy a life time of kmart shoes while you wear 500 dollar boots for the 'image' Guess what no one cares

  • +1

this will go well with my "I'm a lawyer / real estate agent starter pack" lol

    • -1

      Or the quad bike

    • +3

Or an Army personel or a Qantas pilot.

      • Army can buy black RM Williams boots in the Clothing Store on base. restricted to 1 pair a year each but pretty sure they are considerably cheaper than anything you find in the shops. Currently cycling through any mates that are still in to see if somebody hasnt used up their annual boot allocation!

    • they're nice formal shoes buddy, don't get how you can mock that

  • +1

eh i'd rathr put it all on black ;)

    • +1

      That's what she said

Please note that they are Standard G fitting have a wide foot nearly jumped on it.

  • +1

they look like the 20Euro shoes I bought from Primark in Amsterdam =p

    • +2

you have no idea what quality is over cheap garbage.

      • +1

I actually bought alot from primark when i was living in london and cost wise it does help out compared to having buy high $$ fashion shops and the quality isn't that bad, at least not everything is made from china - probably these boots are

        • What you dont understand is premium shoes are an art, while the regular shoes like Nike are cheap and nasty and expensive for the lack of quality, fit and comfort.

What most people dont realise is your average (consumer) shoe ( $ < $200 in all typical shops), is actually extremely expensive for what you are getting.

  • +4

do these count as a high yield investment vehicle as it technically transports you, and is meant to generate you returns over the life of the product?

    • -1

dude the joke is so overplayed..move on

  • +10

    "Sydney Boots".
    Explains the retail price.

    • +3

i choked on my avo toast

  • Don't you need to get fitted for these boots, and then they make them?

    • +1

Nope. Buy off the shelf. Sizing normally down one standard shoe size though so pays to check. There’s a size guide on RMs site.

      • I think I'll get sized in store

        • +1

Good idea I'd say. Along with the size theres three different widths to worry about too.

        • +1

          @Smigit:

Ended up going in and getting fitted:

          I am a size 10 G for the Craftsman
          In the Sydneysider boot I am a 9.5 G

  • +5

word of warning. i recently bought a pair of r.m. williams boots in store fitted - the sizing system is bad.
i wear 9.5…10… maybe 10.5 sneakers in adidas/nike and my r.m. william size is 7.5X (X for xtra wide) you have to size down the number quite consideerable.

don't buy this until you get sized.

    • +1

It is always a good idea to get fitted when purchasing expensive shoes.

in your case i think you're comparing US sizing with UK sizing? US 9.5-10 converts to ~ UK 8

'Soft shoes' tend to stretch so maybe your actual soft shoe sizing is one size smaller but you get one size larger to cater for your wide foot.
So a 7.5x is your actual size in UK.

I find the same that most of the time i need to go up with sneakers but down with shoes.

      • im a 7.5 but the guy said i was a 7.. i insisted on a 7.5x and it worked out fine.

not sure about the conversion because the RM williams sizing doesnt indicate its UK and when i asked they're like its their internal sizing ones.

    • ^ This. Get your size measured at a RM Williams store before you purchase your first pair.

      I'm a US10.5/11 for most shoes, but I'm a 9G for the Craftsman.

      • Are they generally happy at the RM Williams store to just size you? Do they ever offer discounts at official RM Williams stores? Thanks

      • this. im 11.5 usually but 9H in craftsman

  • +1

    I’m not worried about sizing.

I’m more worried if my image will fit in with the highly exclusive ‘McLeods Daughters’ crew….

    • +2

          I didn't buy anything

  • best shoes i've ever owned.

the price isnt the best as you can get this price any day of the week at Nungar Trading (http://www.nungar.com.au/catalog/index.php/cPath/48)

    • Those prices are good.

Is this a legitimate site?? What is delivery pricing like?

      • Nungar Trading is very legitimate.
Shipping at the end of 2017 was $25.

        • agreed, 2-3 day postage and about $25 to sydney

      • +1

Nungar trading is real and been selling RMW for quite a long time. You can't fake that early 2000's era website.

  • This is a great 21st birthday present. One of those things that will last forever that you would probably not buy yourself/be hesitant to purchase.

    • By the time they're comfortable you'll need to replace their soles… and the leather needs care to last more than a 5 years.

  • +1

If i bought 2 pairs would i double my life expectancy?
