Jetstar - Duty Free Alcohol - Carry on Baggage?

Hi All,

I am going to Bali for a wedding soon and I have read a few mix comment about Duty Free alcohol as carry on baggage for Jet star.
Some forum said it is ok and some said Jetstar does not allow it due to "limits to the amount of liquids- in containers of 100ml or less"

Has anyone travel with Jetstar on a international flight recently and bought Duty Free alcohol as carry on baggage?

Thanks!

Carry on Jetstar is fine if it is in a duty free bag. The duty free occurs after all checkin/security scans. Basically you buy and then go straight to gate. 1 litre per person.

Been through a few times from Syd and Darwin. Same idea on the way back

You got duty free on a domestic flight?

When traveling to Australia, duty free alcohol is not allowed to be taken in carry on luggage through security when boarding the plane (can be bought from Jetstar on the plane though). If you try and take liquids on a plane traveling to Australia, there's a very good chance it will be taken from you before you get onto the plane back to Australia.

Booze is cheap enough to buy when you come back to Australia at the duty free place as soon as you get off your flight. Cigarettes/tobacco on the other hand..

I find the duty free shops are at best 5-10% cheaper than retail stores.

The deals posted on OZB are typically miles ahead.

        • I've found that they don't even come close to the deals that can be had in duty free.

A few months ago I got 2x 1L bottles of Absolut 100 Proof for $70AUD. I think that's cheaper than goon per standard drink. Time before that I got Bundy overproof rum which was the same price and even stronger, but that stuff did not go down well.

This is a lot cheaper than 15% off a retail story and there's a sale to take a further 20% off. $32 for that is some really cheap potato juice! I'd be incredibly surprised if there's ever a deal on this site that come close without using duty free.

This is even cheaper per standard drink, but I found it almost undrinkable unless I drowned it in a lot of coke.

I guess it comes down to the drink! Everytime I've looked at single malts in a duty free store, I found it at almost the same price in a local store.

I don't know about the '100 proof' stuff, but using the OZB search shows that Coles had a deal on 2x 1L Absolut vodka for $80, a few months ago.

There's still a huge difference as when comparing duty free to 20% off eBay specials, it's 20% stronger and 20% cheaper than that 20% off deal.

Proof is in the pudding right there - 20% cheaper and 20% stronger than the best eBay deal.

They charge you what ever they like for a single malt because single malt drinkers are generally not the type to care.

at 50%abv, that gets you 1L of alcohol. quick check of the berri 5L goons shows you'd get 2.625 L of alcohol for the same price

Sorry not clear enough. I meant syd-bali and darwin-bali.

And the procedure for bali-australia is,

You go through all security checks first, then through duty free. Any alcohol you buy in duty free, they will deliver to the gate and meet you. This is 100% allowed and will not be an issue.

I've probably made the trip darwin-bali 3 times, sydney-bali once, and then the return flights. Always been the above procedure

The relevant statement on Aus Gov website:

When taking duty free liquid, aerosol and gel items onboard, they should remain in the sealed bag provided at time of purchase. If the seal is broken or items are removed, they may be subject to liquid, aerosol and gel restrictions. These items may include: alcohol—spirits, liquors, wine and beer

  • Thanks all, great help!

Yes it is fine, they do say the duty free counts towards your cabin baggage allowance but I've never been pulled up on it.

Obviously you need to buy the alcohol after screening otherwise the 100ml LAG limit applies
