Just Got Audio Technica M40x Headphones and Was Wondering What AMP/DAC to Buy

So a mate told me to get good sound quality and the highest quality to buy a AMP/DAC and with minimal knowdlege was hoping someone could help me. My budget is $100 and mate recommended me this one:

  • with $100 it's better than nothing

Wouldn't recommend getting a DAC/AMP for such easy to drive/low end headphones unless you're unhappy with the sound from your phone/PC/whichever device you're using them with, so I'd suggest trialling without initially.

    • Ok, my mate only has a $100 sound card from like two years ago

I absolutely agree with donnot, these headphones only have an impedance of 35 ohms, most, if not all devices can drive these easily. A DAC is usually only required if there's something wrong with the device's sound interface or incompatibility with the input interface of the set of headphones and an amp is for headphones have have a higher rated impedance which are harder to drive, in which case then it would be a worthwhile consideration.

  • Battery powered or desktop?

Is the source a PC, do you want a built in sound card/USB?

    • A Desktop and a ps4 and maybe a Android tablet.
As the first question what's the difference?

      • Does it need to be portable? Will he use it on a bus?

        • Yes and yes

  • These headphones dont really need an amp, but if you want a dac get an objective dac or otherwise known as an odac.

  • try your headphones on a phone with inbuilt DAC with your same music. see if you hear a difference
