Why Do People Drive with Headphones in?

Why do so many people wear headphones whilst driving?? I saw an ambulance trying to get through traffic and a guy with headphones in whilst driving was oblivious.

99% of the time it’s Apple headphones too. Don’t people listen to music through the car stereo, so you at least have some auditable awareness of your surroundings? What car doesn’t have Bluetooth these days?

Even without headphones most drivers are oblivious to emergency vehicles.

Heaps of older cars don't have Bluetooth and heaps of older drivers don't know how to use Bluetooth on their car stereo.

    • The majority of people I see are in modern cars and younger then 35.

Sometimes it's just easier to load up Spotify on my phone, plug in some earphones and away I go. Heaps of reasons and I'm sure those who do it could say why.

    What's wrong with headphones?

Apparently, even deaf people are allowed to drive !! What the?

    • +3

Because when you have headphones plugged in you can't hear other sounds?

      • +3

Hmmm…… I was being very sarcastic

But on that point, if it was so dangerous, why isn't it illegal?

  • +7

I can never understand it either.
Apart from sirens from emergency vehicles, it is also helpful if can hear your own car's performance.

Because there are idiots who will drive with tinted windscreens or seats way too far back.

    It is one-upmanship for idiots.

    • whats wrong with a tinted windscreen?

Id rather not have people watch me as i pick my nose and drive

      • Internal reflection when it is dark outside.

Image distortion if film starts failing, applied incorrectly or generally crap quality film.

Hence why it is illegal to tint windscreens on road vehicles.

Maybe they are on the phone in a car without Bluetooth

    • +2

This. It's so they cam make phone calls and not get pinged for holding their phone. The Apple earbuds have a mic in them.

      • I see more people wearing headphones in new cars which I guarantee have Bluetooth.

        • interestingly enough, of my 2 cars that both have bluetooth, one will not work when using skype for business on my phone (which is how i have my morning work conference calls) so in that car I have to use my headphones, even though the bluetooth works for all other streaming and audio only calls…. go figure.

    apple don't have headphones ?

  • -3

do you mean earphones? headphones go around your head. earphones go around your ear

    • If you want to be technical it's universal.

  • +2

99% of the time it’s Apple headphones too

Lmao, what's your point? It's mainly Apple users? Lots of earphones look like Apple ones now. Especially the Samsung ones, cos they're unoriginal as (profanity) and need to copy Apple.

    • Nothing, just they are very identifiable and stand out. I probably don’t even notice other types

  • I sometimes drive with airpods on. Only when I'm driving my parent's old car that doesn't have a working radio and no bluetooth. Mostly I keep 1 in my ear and low volume just in case. I don't see anything wrong with that
Why don't you complain about those people who blast their music extremely loud that their whole car shakes? It's probably worse than earphones..

    • Because the ratio of earphones:cars blasting loud music that their whole car shakes is probably 10:1

  • +4

I hope Vicroads and other state counterparts will make this a road rule of not allowing drivers to use earphones while driving. There has been a lot of accidents associated with this as well.

  • +5

To block out my nagging wife and whinging children.

  • I use my car speakers, but my earphones sound far far better which could be why others do it. But when I'm driving music isn't really my focus so it doesn't need to be audiophile quality.

  • +1

because someone has to be a window licker

  • Is it really that different to deaf people driving?

  • Why Do People Drive with Headphones in?

They need to be plugged in to work.

  • +1

    Apple users… explains it all

  • I use one earphone when I'm talking on the phone coz I don't have Bluetooth and people can't hear me on loud speaker.

  • -1

they are talking to their family in India in most cases

  • "hear no evil, see no evil, do no evil"

  • As a Mbike rider , you have to watch , judge and anticipate other drivers around you ,
and it's just part of the mobile addiction.
It's one thing being distracted at 60kph, but another thing altogether at 110kph in 5 lanes of traffic drifting allover.
Don't be surprised when I split the lanes to get infront of and away from these suicidal morons.

  • Bluetooth is inconvenient, I don't leave my bluetooth turned on 24/7 it's a power drain and a security issue, AUX input is ideal, simple, higher quality and what we use. The only reason I used to drive with earphones in was because my old car's head unit didn't work for about a year. Other than that, they could be talking on the phone.

    • Sudden Death is also likely to be inconvenient
Most likely you kill someone else though , bummer.

      • Do you know what AUX is or did you just not read?

        • Maybe both

  • Someone reversed out of a car spot, straight into my rear passenger side door. Despite me holding my hand on the horn, the guy had his headphones in and was oblivious.
