Does Mungi Block UDP/Trackers/Torrenting Somehow?

Hi, hoping someone can confirm for me, does Mungi block torrenting somehow?

Just moved over from Buzz, all was working perfectly with Buzz, and now I cannot download a torrent at all. All trackers not working, and DHT/PeX don't find any peers. Torrents just remain stalled, no peer connections, no peers even discovered.

Tested with legal torrents such as Linux ISO's etc.

I'm on FTTP with the same modem/router I was using before with Buzz. Only username/password changed and the Uni-D port from 1 to 3.
Have tried multiple devices, and multiple torrent clients.
Have set router to minimum security/firewall settings.
Have set my device as a DMZ host (so no connections blocked by modem/router).
Have completely disabled firewall on my machine.
Reset router to factory settings multiple times.
Web browsing works fine, although a little slow compared to my expectations.
When I hotspot from my mobile phones connection, torrents start immediately.
Used free trial from NordVPN and torrents started straight away.

If I find peers using hotspot or VPN, then disconnect and go back to plain Mungi connection the torrents will make P2P connections with the peer list that is already found, but trackers and DHT etc will stop finding new peers.

So, is my ISP blocking this somehow? I'm in IT, and have a fair amount of experience with residential internet setups, and this is the first time I can't figure it out.

Any help very much appreciated.

Cheers.

  • Yep any ISP backhauled by Vocus can have this happen unfortunatley.

VPN or private trackers is the only way.

    • Ok, good to know. At least that is a definitive answer. If I switch ISP's will it still be backhauled by Vocus?

      • Only if you choose an ISP using Vocus.

        • Where do I find this information about ISP's?

        • @Mattystein: Whirlpool is a good place to start. You'll find topics about various ISPs all over the website which should be able to tell you who resells who.

        • @Clear: Cheers :)

buzz was on vocus before went bust

if it was working before when you were on buzz, then it shouldn't be on vocus issue ?

        • I just looked that up, yes Buzz was with Vocus, it mentioned it in their closing down email.

So why can't I download with Mungi now??? Very frustrating.

I cannot get any torrent to work, even downloading a legal Linux ISO or alike.

    • So just researching more, Buzz was with Vocus and I had no trouble with them. Surely that's not it.

      • I am sure Mungi and Buzz were both on Vocus. Did you contact Mungi support?

  • I just tried downloading from eztv and it works. I am using Getflix (some DNS thing as I dont know how to set up VPN)

    • Cheers, will look into it. They seem to offer Smart DNS and VPN, but I'm assuming you only did the Smart DNS then? Changing it on router or your personal device?

      • Just on device. However, not saying that Getflix = success in downloading. But thought there was a chance it might have been a factor! I am not sure what Getflix actually does as it seems like my IP address is the same, but I just happen to have a really cheap subscription so kept it going just in case I sign up to Hulu etc in the future.

        • Can you confirm, you are with Mungi?

And all you've done is changed DNS details? No installed program/VPN or anything? Do you pay for Getflix?

          Thanks for your help.

        • @Mattystein: yes, with Mungi. I've had Getflix for a few years and just updated the IP address on it. I pay about $1.80 per month but that's because I got a good price from the Start. No VPN, just the basic Getflix DNS set up.

        • @kza2610: Just tried the Getflix 14 day trial. Changed DNS etc. Does not work for me.

Considering yours works no problem with Mungi, maybe it's my modem/router? But then, I have no idea why it was working perfectly on Buzz.

          Even private trackers don't work.

Completely stumped, I really appreciate your help.

    What a cancer ISP …

  • Would love to hear from anyone using Mungi and if they can download a torrent without VPN.

  • Ok, looking more into it.

Does anyone know if this is caused by the fact that Mungi is using a CG (Carrier Grade) NAT? If so, is there a workaround?

  • Bingo. Thats the problem. They use CGNAT. You'll need to pay an additional $10/month for a static Real world IP to get it working

    • I asked the Mungi rep on here (@MungiDreamIT) and they told me that CGNAT hadn't been implemented for Mungi customers yet, they are only introducing it in the coming months. Although it would seem to explain the exact issues I'm having.

When I check the IP address displayed within the router, it does match the external IP address shown on showmyip.com or other similar websites, so that does suggest I have a public IP and am not behind a CGNAT. Although it's all new to me so I may be mistaken.

I actually just ordered an Asus RT-AC68U, an upgrade I've wanted to do for a while and not to try and fix this, but at least I can definitively rule out the router if I still have the same problem.

I guess when it comes down to it, I've ruled out most causes. I may end up churning to Telecube or AussieBB out of curiosity.

Will update if the new router gives different results.

  • I moved from Buzz and have the same problem as well. I raised a ticket with them and got this response:
“Apologies for the inconvenience this issue has already been escalated to the Vocus network team.

We aim to have this resolved by Wednesday at the latest.

There seems to be a radius issue with some customers who switched from BUZZ ( We use the same Wholesaler).

We will be switching everyone to our in-house radius shortly.”

Seems to make sense as there are Mungi users out there who do not have torrent issues.

I guess will wait til Wednesday and see how it goes.
If anyone else out there has the same issue I would encourage raising a ticket with so they know how widespread the problem is. Their customer service is quite good and they have been very responsive.

    • Just an update on this, Mungi have moved me onto their Layer 2 network and this seems to have resolved my issues.
Hope OPs issue has been resolved as well!
      Cheers

  • Maybe changing your DNS to Google, opendns etc will fix it

  • If you leave your DNS to automatic you will be fine, if you use google's primary and secondary DNS servers you will be fine, if you set your DNS directly to a Vocus DNS server you will not be fine.

This info is first hand. I am with Mungi.
