i just flew regular economy with qantas Bris->LAX 3 weeks ago.

    it was average

    • And I didn't fly at all, and that was also average….

      Your point is???

      • i thought my point was pretty obvious.

qantas, for the Bris — LAX run, is average.

But…..She specifically asked for someone's experience on Premium Economy on this route, not regular economy.

Wife and I flew PE MEL-LAX with Qantas a few years sgo.
It was pretty good. Great leg room, and I am 6-4, and we were able to board and exit more quickly than the Economy passengers.
We could get food and drinks on demand, and it was great to get a toasty and juice when you wanted to eat, not when they wanted you to eat.
We bought the tix on special, so it was not much more than the cost of a full Economy ticket.
Not as good as Business Class, particularly since Qantas has refurbed, but a good experience. And, if you have points, it potentially gives you a better shot at an upgrade.

  • BNE-LAX is now offering Dreamliners for Qantas. Maybe look at premium economy Dreamliner reviews. I would disregard old reviews from the old 747s.

  • All flights now between Brisbane and Los Angeles are with the dreamliners and from all accounts have pretty good reviews!

The big difference between Economy and Premium Economy is the legroom and the width of the seat.

  • Here's a review of Virgin Australia's Premium Economy to LAX.

They have at least 3 inches more legroom than Qantas' PE and the food menu + plating (white linen, real glassware and crockery) is at their Domestic Business Class level.

If you are able to easily justify the extra expense, then definitely go for it :)

Otherwise as a compromise, consider VA's Economy X product which is about $150pp each way on top of the normal Economy fare, and gives you much better legroom (at least a few inches - now plenty of space in front of the knees), noise cancelling earphones, first choice of meals and priority boarding. You select it during the seat selection stage of booking.

    • RE: priority boarding… why do airlines make such a big deal about this? I wait until the queue is non-existant then board. What's the point on getting to your allocated seat before anyone else?

If the argument is the overhead bins, I just use under the seat in front of me.

      • You're right, it's not that big a deal. I guess it appeals to the type of people who don't like standing in a queue or being 'left behind' in the gate lounge..

In Business Class (and Virgin's PE), it's a chance to settle down earlier in your comfy seat and get a pre-departure drink.

In Economy, it would be to avoid being stuck in the narrow aisle while other people are putting their luggage away. Your argument is valid - you could equally be the last the board to avoid this problem.

  • Hubby and I got an upgrade through the bidding option when we did Bris to LaX we loved the extra space and the food/drink. Wouldn’t pay a crazy amount extra for it but if it’s a good price we would definitely go premium over economy. Currently waiting for a decent sale to go again
