Travelling to Vietnam and flying in to Hanoi. What would be the best method of travel to get to Hoi An and recommended places to visit in both places please.

100% Hanoi to Danang flight.
I personally went Hanoi to Hue, then rode on the back of a motorcycle to Hoi An.. But ye go to Danang.
+1 for flight to Da Nang then car transfer to Hoi An.
I travelled from South to North of Vietnam, so I took a plane from HCMC to Hue then did a motorbike tour to Hoi An. It is pretty cheap to fly within Vietnam and way faster than train. Though some may prefer overnight train so they can sleep during the travel.
Depends on how much time you have.
If you have time 100% recommend flying from Hanoi to Hue; staying in Hue a couple of nights then getting a bus to Hoi An.

Hanoi: get out and go North to Sapa/ Lao cai or East Ha Long / Cat Ba.Fly to Da Nang. Hoi An is around a 30min drive from Da Nang, so it wouldn't cost that much with an uber/grab
Fast: flight to Da Nang then transfer.
Slooow: train or bus to Da Nang then transfer.
Hoi An is compact. The UNESCO listed town is the attraction.
PS: Vietnam is a long country N-S.
