Tablet Automatically Connected to Mysterious Hotspot Connection

This might sound weird but it's true and I'm hoping that there is an explanation behind it. Came back to my hotel room after dinner and when I picked up my tablet it was already connected to some Wi-Fi network. This was a surprise as I never connected it to any network including the hotel Wi-Fi. SSID it was connected to was iPhone and yes I have an iPhone but it has a different name and personal hotspot was turned off and I even turned off my iPhone to rule out but tablet was still connected to this iPhone and I could access internet. Now I tried getting some info,MAC was b23c92e582ac.
It disappeared after a while. I tried connecting to it from my iPhone but got the password prompt, same when I tried from an Android phone. Tablet does show a save Wi-Fi network called iPhone, is it possible that the password for that saved iPhone SSID was somehow same as this mysterious iPhone SSID. The other strange thing is that MAC lookup shows nothing. Any ideas?

  • Could be the SSID was already known to your device from a different location using the same SSID, and/or simply an open hotspot that requires secondary authentication.

    • SSID could definitely be known as it's the default iPhone SSID if device name hasn't been changed but password? I believe iPhone generates a unique random password which is different on each device? It wasn't an open hotspot as untried connecting with other device. What do you mean by open and requires secondary authentication?

      • Sec auth: You need to authenticate on a captive web page before you can access the Internet.

While you were out of your hotel room the person in the adjoining suite entered your room and established the connection. They were then hoping to keylog you while you did internet banking etc. Unfortunately for them all they discovered was your ozbargain password. I suggest you change it now.

  • I was driving yesterday and this happen to me also. I stopped in north Sydney for a min and when i checked my phone i auto connected to a WiFi hot spot in the middle of no where.
Whilst still being in the car?

Could it have been Telstra air? My iPad does this randomly even at home. Have to go to wifi settings and change network.

Sell it. Unlimited wifi tablet anywhere.

  • You wife is hiding next door.

  • Some android devices have the ability to auto connect to open wifi networks to save your mobile data https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/6327199?hl=en

    • How was that an open wifi connection when my other android device couldn’t to it and I believe it was a hotspot based on the icon I could see On my iPhone. What about the MAC not coming up with a vendor in the search.

  • Sorry to hear that Quebec. That is indeed worrying. On the upside it is good to see that you are an alert enough sort of a person to have noticed it pronto and dealt with it before any damage was done or passwords were keylogged.

But if you're like me I bet the paranoia and curiosity factor must be bugging you. I had something like this happen about six months ago on my home network which is pretty secure, I monitor the heck out of it and suddenly noticed a new device connect.

I immediately blocked it and searched the MAC address and it was an iPhone. What had me scratching my head is I don't own an iPhone and never have. All my home stuff is Android or 3rd Party stuff, and I've never even let visitors on.

Left me paranoid for days to the point where I was out in the street scanning for that damn MAC…

If you or anyone figure it out I'd love to know. Do you think housekeeping might have been up to no good?

    • I don’t think anyone could have accessed the device and connected it as it has a very secure password. Only think I can think of is that SSID iPhone was saved when I must have connected it to my iPhone when it was called that and used the Apple generated random password. And someone else had the mobile hotspot turned on and for some reason their iPhone generated the same password generated by
My iPhone which was saved in my tablet. I can still see SSID iPhone saved in tablet, just need to root it to see the password that might give some hint if the saved password is indeed an Apple generated random password.
