Telstra "Features" with Grey Import Handsets

Hello there

I am considering buying a Samsung-supplied handset in Hong Kong. Do these handsets support features on Telstra such as RCS, VoWIFI and VoLTE?

I've only had experience with Samsung-supplied handsets (ie. not customised by carrier) bought outright in Australia - and the handset in this case does support the features.

Not keen to reflash so as to not trip Knox.

Thankyou!

Not hundred percent sure, but I bought my s7 edge from eglobal (so intl version) I think it used to say emirates version on it (dual sim version). Everything looked normal but no volte or anything like that, that I could see? I reflashed it with the Australian Stock version and then VoLTE symbol appeared so I guess I have it after reflashing stock Aus rom.

Note that by reflashing it (I think I used odin and official rom) I did not trip knox, and my settings says my device is "official" and I /think/ I can use Samsung pay now (though I don't have a bank thats accepted).

Not sure if its the same as you, and I had to follow a guide to make sure I didn't trip knox but yeah, good luck.

    • Thanks for the input, appreciated!

Yep he's on the money, you can check the XDA Samsung forums if you want more info. But flashing stock firmware via Odin is the best way to get carrier functionality without triggering any firmware modification flags.
Samsung warranty won't cover a grey import, so tripping Knox is only going to matter to your use case. Carrier functionality like VoLTE also works on a Knox trip, just not certain Samsung apps.

    • If I were to flash it with the Australian stock rom, would it then grab the stock Australian OTA updates, or would I have to manually flash the updates as they become available?

      • Apologies for the late reply, but my phone has been updating through OTA, I haven't needed to flash it manually at all. I think it all depends which stock rom you install, (I think if you get carrier ones like Telstra or Optus it may be slower and come with more bloat?) but mine does OTA no probs.

        • No worries, thanks for the reply

  • If you flash it with the Australian stock rom I believe it essentially counts as a 'one off' I don't believe it will start automatically grabbing the OTA updates. However you would obviously be able to re-flash with the updated roms.
