Porting out Fee (Optus to Telstra)

Finally jumped ship from Optus (after being with them for 20 years) to Telstra with the recent JB HiFi deal and I got charged by Optus a $7.27 porting fee.

Is this normal?

what do the terms and conditions of your optus contract say?

What did Optus say when you called them about this charge?

The trick is to move your number to a PREPAID service before porting.

    • Are you saying if you move say a Telstra POSTPAID service into Telstra PREPAID and then port it to say Optus/Voda, you will escape the porting fee?

Ex telco myself. It is normal but if you have a whinge they will more than likely wipe it without much hassle.

  • Cheers for all the info. When I asked how much to cancel the last month they never mentioned it at all.

    • If you called them, more than likely they would've recorded your call "for quality and training purposes".

Call them again and refer them to your previous call and lodge an internal complaint.
Pending on the outcome of that complaint (which should, in all likelihood, go in your favour), you can then explore further options if necessary.

  • Was it listed as a 'porting fee'? Otherwise if it was an unidentified fee then that would likely be part of a contract termination fee. If it was a standalone bill, then it was likely covering the final days of your month prior to your port out (e.g a $30 per month plan would charge approx $7 if porting out 7 days into your month).

  • Just went on Optus chat and complained that I was not told about the fee when I asked how much to cancel plan and move to Telstra. Both port out fees cancelled!

  • Is this normal?

could be, I am looking at leaving Vodafone, and noticed on their website that there is $8 fee to move to another provider………
