How to Connect Bookshelf Speakers to TV?

Hi,

I bought these Wharfdale Diamond 220 speakers from a bargain a while ago + SMSL amp from ebay. It works for my computer, but for my Smart TV I am having issues.

My Amp

I got a Digital Audio Output converter which connects to the the TV.
The RCA cables from my amp plugs into the converter.

Still doesn't work.

Do I need to get an AC receiver or can I get another part to add on? I'm quite a newbie with these tech.

Thanks in advance!!!

Grab yourself a regular RCA cable and you should be sorted (unless the RCA cable you have is a standard one already). You can get them from just about anywhere.

I'm not sure what you need a digital convertor for, unless you don't have any analogue outputs on the TV. The amp is a digital amp, but that's describing the processing, not the input.

    Hope that helps

    • The amp is a digital amp, but that's describing the processing, not the input.

The amp is digital because it likely has digital inputs and a DAC. I have a similar SMSL amp and it accepts analogue (RCA, 3.5mm) and digital (optical, USB).

You're right that he shouldn't need the digital converter though. Assuming the TV has RCA outputs the OP should just be able to plug and go (selecting the correct input on the amp).

maybe just use the 3.5 jack?

Your speakers are irrelevant, you need to look at the output available on the amp, and one of the outputs must match an input in the tv. In this case i would say rca is what you want. Keep in mind there is rca for video as well as audio, make sure you are using the audio rca input on your tv.

You would be much better served saying what tv you are using than what speakers.

    • You got the input and output backwards. Output on TV, input on amp (unless you want to feed 60w into the line level inputs on the TV).

I'm guessing you want to connect the TV and computer to the amp at the same time and switch source using the select button on the amp?
I believe the amp has 2x inputs (1) RCA and (2) headphone
I believe the amp only has left and right speaker outputs.

If the computer is connected to the amp using the RCA input, you'll need to use the headphone input for the TV. Or unplug the computer and use the RCA for the TV. Swapping them in/out as you change your source device (TV/computer).

Need to figure out how to get analogue audio out of the TV.
    (1) If it has a headphone output, get a lead with a plug to suit the headphone output on the TV and plug on the other end to suit the headphone input of the amp. Hopefully there is enough signal level to drive the amp.
    (2) If it has a set of RCA audio outputs (typically red and white), a standard set of RCA leads with red and white on each end will do, but you will need to unplug the computer to use the RCA input of the amp. OR get a lead that has a pair of RCA plugs on one end and a plug on the other end to suit the amp headphone input.
Alternatively, take the audio output of the computer and connect it to the headphone input of the amp with the appropriate lead.

As garetz mentions, what TV are you using?

How are you connecting the computer to the amp? What output from computer? What input to amp?

As for the Digital Audio Output converter, I'm guessing this takes coax or optical digital output from the TV and converts it to analog audio with a pair of RCA as the output. In that case, follow (2) from above.

Have you checked your TV configuration menu? Some TV needs manual selection to choose which output the audio should go to.

    • Yep agree with this - I had to swap over the output on my Samsung tv when using a DAC

  • what is the model of the TV ?
Does it have a Headphone jack out ?

possibly use a 3.5 to Rca

  • This shouldnt be a hard question. Most TVs have 3.5 out or stereo rca out.

Buy the correct cable from ebay for a few bucks and sort out if you want input 1 or 2 on your amp.
