+7% cashrewards and 5% wish cards … pretty good deal for ~$75

    • +2

      4% cashback on spirits

  • Anyone know the approx price of this in Japan? :)

    • You get the 200ml bottle in the 7Eleven stores at about AUD$11 from memory.
I think it is great whisky, but also think the new "Chita" is probably tastier.
      I bought it anyway.

I am here now and the 180 ML bottle is 1103 ¥ which is $13.40 or thereabouts.
Really hard to find find anything special.
Did see a full size bottle for¥ 4700

      • Nah the Hakushu is much better than the Chita IMO. The Chita has a very young fruity flavor. It's ok. Cheaper to buy in Japan vs Hakushu.

        • +2

The Chita is quite a unique flavour. It works for me. I'll take Yamazaki 12 over it any day though.

I am travelling aorund japan, been drinking 200 ml Santoury for 548 yen at the local 7/11

200 ml will be around the 1100 yen mark.

I believe this bottle was cheapest at 100 bucks at costco so its a good deal

      • +1

i love Chita!! it is so easy to drink, maybe bcs im a beginner. i find the hakushu a bit too smokey/peaty (not sure if it's the right term, too strong i mean).

Chita is the same price too @ $84.95

        • To me, easy too drink is not good…
          I'll finish a bottle before sunrise !

    • +1

Amazon Japan has it for 6400 yen, about aus$78

Got one bottle about JPY5400 in Tokyo last September but considering 29% wine equalisation tax AUD84.90 is a reasonably good price.

  • May have to grab a couple of bottles of this. Absolutely delicious

  • is this better or talisker 10?
im planning on buying my first ever whisky!

    • +9

Whisky is a very individual thing. Best to try both

    • As Chumlee said.

      I've never tried Japanese

    • If it is your first, you either like talisker a lot or absolutely hate it. My first whisky was talisker, i love it a lot and now i mostly drink peaty whiskies. I still can't justify buying japanese whiskies. They are too expensive and there are still plenty of other scotch i need to try for better value

    • For a first whisky I’d suggest something lighter such as a Glenmorangis 10yr old. Monkey shoulder is also good value in the cheaper whiskies.

Is it only me or there are many people out there who can't taste the different notes in Whisky (except smokey note). To me all the whiskeys tastes the same. FYI - I am regular whiskey drinker

    • +9

      Yes, just you…

    • +2

Coke will always taste like coke.. :P

    • +1

For me the alcohol numbs the taste buds quite quickly. The first sip can be an explosion of different flavours, but after that diminishing returns. No point comparing different ones either, the first one will always be the only one that comes through.

      • +4

use a few drops of water then, or water right down with room temp 50/50 mix and then allow the flavour to come out

        • Ew I wouldn’t go 50/50 with single malt.

      • I used to think that too (first one would be the only one that comes through), being a bit of a whisky noob.

Suddenly I had 6 bottles and decided to do a blind taste test with a friends assistance. With and without a few drops of water.
Even moving between them, in reasonably quick succession (with a few sips of water inbetween), the aroma and taste was noticably different.
I hadn't ever tried the Nikka 12Yr or tasted a couple of them in a while.

In order of preference left to right. I really didn't like the nikka taketsuru pure malt.

    • Well, Whisky and Whiskey are quite different.

    • No, there are many varieties with different results. I'm on a Whisky Appreciation Group so learning a little bit each time…Then I forgot and need to go back for refresher LOL

Each to their own for me Hakushu < Hibiki (blended) < Yamazaki < Hakushu 12 < Yamazaki 12 (if you can find)

At this price point a bottle of Dalwhinnie 15 (on special) is a better option or splurge a little more for Glenlivet 15

    Still worthy of an upvote!

    • +1

+1 for Dalwhinnie, has been my go to scotch for many years. I find if difficult to buy anything else that compares for bang for buck for a top notch scotch.

    • Totally agree with Khepri. Aged Japanese whiskey was previously good bang-for-buck, but that has been several years gone. The price of Japanese whiskey has climbed exponentially, while Scotch has not and is now far better value for money.

    • where does Chita sit in your list?

  • +1

Plenty at Warrick Farm/Orange Grove DM (NSW). I always spend more than I should. Ended up with the whisky, Sake and Sapporo premium. Thanks for the heads up.

  • +4

Just to forewarn, Hakushu has been available in Australia before, and previously it was given an age and not age unspecified like this. These age unspecified bottles are only 4 years or so old.

  • +1

As the comment above, this is not a fancy bottle of whiskey in Japan. You can find these in 100-200ml varieties for around $10 equivalent at many convenience stores in Tokyo. The aged bottles on the other hand were quite good.

  • Can't remember how much but Costco has the the same hakashu distillers reserve

    • Was $97.99 last week at Costco Docklands.

      • same at Auburn NSW

  • How does this compare against nikka from the barrel?

    • +1

I did a quick taste test comparison to answer this. I'd say Hakushu is nice on the nose and bit more of a consistent flavour and going on but quickly drops off, Nikka is a pretty powerful hit even with water (at 51.4%!) and leaves a lasting impression.

I'd recommend the Hakushu for most folks over Nikka from the barrel.

      • Nikka packs a solid punch at 51.4%. As phuzz pointed out, it leaves a lasting impression with cinnamon, cloves and peppery notes on the palate. The Hakushu is pleasant on the nose and quite well balanced. Really digging the citrus and minty vibes.
Two very different whiskies, but both really good in any collection

  • +5

Cheers OP! Just added this to my collection

    • You the champ!

  • Would this be cheaper in Melbourne airport? I bought a bottle of hibiki on my way out but it still cost $120 no saving from dans

    • no, even if you find it at AU airports its a rip. Buy from wherever you are heading to, 95% it will be cheaper than our airports

  • +1

NAS - not a good sign.

  • +1

For that money I would go for a 12 year old Scotch single malt. Also worth trying the new Australian whiskies, I especially enjoy the Starward Whisky which is made in Melbourne and one international awards.

    • Do you recommend Singleton? On special at Dan's for $68.90 at the moment.

  • Costco have now beaten this it is 84.79 at Costco moorabbin

  • The 12YO Hakushu is the best whiskey I've ever had, so good! It's a bit more expensive but it's honestly worth the extra if you want something special to drink.

  • Don't forget your E-wish gift cards with 5% off!
