Why Are There So Many American Scammers on eBay

Try to sell something on eBay.
Someone just bought it without pay. Ask me for PayPal details and send me scam email like the screenshot below.

I just cancel the order. Will I be charged by eBay and how can I report this?

  • Just an FYI your name is visible in the mono snap bar at the top even though you’ve blurred out particulars in the scam photos

Below may answer your question though article date seems old

That's obviously a fake Paypal payment receipt. Don't click the links in it.

Most importantly DO NOT LOGIN into Paypal via the links in it because it will steal your passwords

    https://www.ebay.com.au/help/selling/resolving-buyer-issues/…

If the buyer has sent you a fake email, using an eBay logo or Paypal logo, you can forward this to eBay ([email protected])
    https://pages.ebay.com/securitycenter/stay_safe.html#fake_em…

Report it to ebay first, before you cancel the transaction. If you cancel the transaction you might still need to pay ebay listing or seller fees (except the final value fee)

They gave you their address, maybe you can have some fun with it and scare them a little :)

No they didn't. If you notice that they both have the same address but with a different 6-digit suite number.

That's most likely because it's a virtual shipping warehouse.

Incoming packages will all go to the same building and then on arrival, the company will email the "owner" of the suite (which is really just an account number) and forward it to an address of their choosing.

The fact that it's Portland, Oregon is another big give-away. As Portland is a tax free state, so popular for shipping forwarders as it reduces tax on purchases.

one purpose would be to phish for your paypal password rather than scamming the good.

Once you see the email that it is paid, you will click on the links in the email to check your balance.
give them your password and the scam would be complete

How did you work out it was fake? I thought all PayPal emails came from [email protected] ?

  • Check your seller account on eBay. If it shows that the item has not sold you can block the buyer from bidding.

If they have purchased it already then when a paypal payment is made eBay will mark the transaction as paid by the buyer. Login directly to eBay and check. Do not use the links in the email as it will probably gain access to your ebay account and password via keylogging or other means. Note that with Paypal the funds will be in your account immediately if the buyer uses Paypal. The comments on the second image advise you will be paid once the item is sent. This is not how Paypal works.

If the transaction is a scam then you meed to report it to eBay first and let them handle it. If you take matters into your own hands and cancel the transaction it is less likely that eBay will refund you any listing or final value fees as they give the buyer the benefit of doubt.

You can also login directly to your Paypal account to check the payment. If nothing is there then the buyer is having you on.

If you view in the first image where the email came from you can see that it is a scam as it came from a gmail account.

However to stop the transaction you need to go through the proper channels on eBay otherwise things work against you.

You can report it to ebay via the help option in the menu at the top of most screens. Just go to help, type in thr search bar selling, then it will come up with some options and look for problems with a buyer or tyoe that in. If you scroll to the bottom of the page normally there is an option to select chat or send an email. I’d select chat. Otherwise there may also be an option for them to call you.

If you cancel you'll have to pay seller fees and you'll get a defect. Just tell them to pay through ebay, when enough time has passed that you can report a non paying bidder then do that.

wait 5(?) days. the fake payment won't show paid via ebay.

launch a non-payment by seller dispute.

it takes time and is a waste of your time. ebay will eventually return the sellers fee to you.

did you offer international postage on the item? if not then cancel the sale as "there is a problem with the buyer address". ebay will eventually return the sellers fee to you.

relist the item with "no international shipping".

  • Cause this makes 'merica great! (again)
