Telstra - No Service Offered, Any Advice?

I have just been speaking to Telstra. They do not offer any services in my new area which is Opticomm Fiber.

I am trying to get out of the ETC from Telstra as they tell me that even though they cannot offer a service the contract is still my responsibility.

This is, probably, fair enough. That said, I would still like to pay less than the $300~ they quoted, or even better, nothing.

Has anybody been in a similar situation with Telstra or another Telco? Did you get it reduced or waived?

It's very annoying as I am quite happy with Telstra and would rather not have to find a new RSP.

n.b. I am not suggesting they are not within their rights to charge the ETC.. They are - I agreed to the contract.

Call them, ask to speak with disconnections and get them to check your new address in the system. If it comes up unserviceable they are required to waive the contract ETC's. However, any devices (such as the cost of the modem etc) will still have to be paid out unless you purchased it a few days ago, in which case you can try and have a return order placed. Best of luck :)

Are any of your friends interested in telstra cable? Perhaps you can sign over your account to their address instead?

  • Bit late now - however we were in that exact situation (Telstra to opticomm estate) and Telstra said their policy was to waive any fees as we were moving to an area they don't service. I just gave them the new address and they confirmed they couldn't move the service there no problem.

They even told me when I rang a month ahead to leave it until a couple of days before as they pro-rata the final month.

Yeah, I've managed to get the fees waived on the condition I return the Foxtel box. Seems fair, especially as I don't have to pay return postage.
