Bunnings Offcuts Box: Tricks, Good Finds?

Bit of a random topic this.
Whenever I go for a Bunnings browse, about 1/3 of the time I'll check out the offcuts box at the cut shop even though I am hopeless at handyman (I'm an Ozito owner, nuff said lol j/k)

Just wondering if anyone else goes to check out the box regularly as much as I seem to lol. Any good grabs, or even bad stories, or tricks you have to not get over charged?

Best I've had would be:
- decent sized sheets of thickish mdf boards
- big sheet of "Easycraft EasyREGENCY" mdf board that has a strangely high rrp?
- decent length like 1.5m of IRONwood treated pine sleeper
(Not that I've built anything yet)

The bad:
- I used to get a bunch of say sheets for a $2 buy, or a pile of small bits for free, but lately I'm getting charged per piece (ok fair enough)
- similarly, I've simultaneously had one big piece for $2, then tiny squares of the same things charged at $1 each (no surprise I ditch them at the register if that's the case)
- big pieces I get from there they give me a greasy look as if I'm lying about where I got it from even though the barcode half has clearly been cut off

Yep, in the timber yard with the cover sheets

      • Do all Bunnings have an offcuts box?

        • Yep

My local has a skip bin out the back where they chuck damaged stock and off cuts. I pretty much built a whole shed out of what I score every morning after doing the school run. I always check it out first when I start a new project. Currently I'm collecting treated pine for a deck I'm about to build in the near future :P

As an Arlec rep we were forced to throw out perfectly good returned stock as we weren't allowed to test electrical items in store.

      • Crazy! I haven't come across any electrical items yet. I'd probably be a bit hesitant using them though!

      • In our business park there was a skip outside an office being renovated, and they had all sorts of perfectly looking stuff in there like desk phones and power conduits and sockets.
Too can't really make use of them because of the laws though so didn't get any.

        • I've thought about cruising around areas that are being developed with lots of building sites and going dumpster diving, but I'm worried they might think I'm looking to thieve!

    • My Bunnings frequently has decking offcuts, some still quite long. So on the face of it seems like a good price for hardwood. Compared to aisle with their dressed sticks and beams anyway.

  • Most of the boxes are where they do the cutting for customers. Best find I got was a 1m Jarrah sleeper. 200mmx75mm. Paid $1.00

    • Picked up a while bunch of sleepers today, albeit only normal IRONwood treated pine ones.

And from now on if there are multiples of good pieces I'm going to find a nearby staff member to ask about buying them. I bought about 7m worth of 200x50 sleepers they had cut into 800mm lengths and on asking a trade area staff member he happily wrote up a docket for me to take the lot for just $5; a regular cashier person prob would've charged me $1 per piece, if not just assert I had a new one precut
