Only available in selected areas of Sydney.

      • sydney to katoomba?

took uberx number of times last week, never been offered uberpool as an option from Sydney CBD..
Just checked now, and nope. nothing.

    • It’s the same with me at the moment, maybe has to do with the fact that it isn’t within the time period yet?

  • +3

About time this started to be available in Australia, used it extensively over in the states, great product offering. I truly see this being part of the future for public transport. Imagine local governments replacing all bus routes with small autonomous vehicles routed by computers like this?

    • +1

There was a time where it was available for about a week. They were trialing it I believe. It saved quite a bit of money and the strangers weren’t so bad either!

      • you are lucky the strangers have no body odour.

    • Yeah, we used it a heap in New York. For getting around Manhattan and uber pool (or Lyft Line) was about $7, whereas two subway tickets was $5.50. We didn't bother taking the subway much.

It will lead to massive levels of congestion on top of what we have already as all the people formerly on buses now use multiple vehicles. Obviously the carbon footprint will be much higher as well.

Just tried it to see if I could get a POOL to my actual Home, but since I live ~20 km from the CBD it excluded me from even getting a POOL. I think this is targeted at the inner city millennials.

    • Maybe it hasn’t worked yet since it isn’t within the promo period?

    • +23

      inner city millennials

You probably got excluded because they don't want people with that attitude using their service.

      • haha..

I like to call it 'sass'

I found this map showing the areas that are serviced by UberPool.

So sad my home is well out of the zone :(

    • Damn, me too :(
I think I received the email because I had used it once during the promo period. It now thinks I live in the city. I’m actually based out in Western Sydney :(

    • This explains a lot. I needed to go to north shore

    • Damn! I should move to my parent's house for a week :P

    • +1

So basically Rozelle -> Watsons Bay -> Randwick -> Sydenham

and handily looks like it excludes the airport?

oh well like Ubereats did (to my belly) it'll expand with time.

      • +1

Just get an Uber from the airport to the edge of the UberPOOL zone.

      • +1

Of course, how are they going fit everyone's luggage.

  • Saw above -fixed-

  • +3

Used this in Vegas multiple times. Awesome if you are not in any rush!

  • +1

I assume you get picked up in something like this?

    • Literally Uber "Pool"

  • off topic, i just checked my app and they seem to have added a credit of $100 for 1 trip, anyone get the same

    cheers

    • +1

Yep. $100! Expiry 11 May. Might try something more upmarket than UberX!

  • Is this pool compatible with this fence?

  • Wow, what a disruptor of a company, the way of the future! How has no one thought of this before? Travel where your trip is subsidised due to sharing the cost with other passengers? Oh wait, that's a bus.

The only thing bold and new this company provides is a driver getting exploited by skirting employment laws.

    • +5

So there's a bus that comes to my corner, picks me up, lets me sit in a comfortable seat, and takes me to the closest corner to where I want to get out, any time of the day - at my beck and call? Wow! The public transport system really has improved.

IMO ride sharing (not just car summoning) is the most important transport improvement we can currently make. There are too many low occupant cars on the road; it's bad for the environment, bad for roads, bad for traffic.

      • +2

And experts say the best improvement would be more public mass transit which will remove cars unlike ride sharing.

  • I actually thought this was a car with a pool in the back

  • +2

uber is desperate to sell this shity service that, that makes driving for them less attractive

    • Have you actually used UberPOOL? If so, why is it so shitty?

I've personally used it several times in SF / LA and its a great service for passengers, and from what I could tell drivers - app does all the routing for them, they just drive to way-points, and the Uber drivers I talked to said they had a more constant stream of passengers vs UberX.

      • +5

        I have driven pool once.
Pick up pax 1 on moore park rd, on the way to central get re-routed to oxford st to get pax 2, n extra 5-10 minutes detour for him to pick up pax 2, drop pax 1 off in an illegal area because that's what the app says. Take pax 2 to glebe, keen to log off because I'm near home and have been driving for 5 hours but uber-auto accept another passenger, unknowingly drive pass pax 3, because it was impossible for pax 2 to get out safely at ubers designated drop off location(pax 3 pickup)… pax 3 rings me telling me I drove passed her pickup location, didn't know this because I was more focus on getting pax 2 out safely, pax 3 was only 10 meters away and managed to get in as pax 2 gets out, drop pax 3 off and roller coaster ends….. this was in sober hours and the passengers were cool about it all, but drunk people create drama and are mean, so I would expect something like pool in the drunk hours would be horrible.

As a driver the key issues with pool is safety of loading/off-loading passengers(uber's locations are shit), less pay, and how thing could escalate with multiple pax at the same time.

  • +1

Only use this if you're not in a hurry.

  • It would be good if it could string together your work mates or friends. Riding with strangers seems a bit awkward.

    • You can take 1 extra person with you.

That saying, you could also get another person to request a ride too (for 2 people), and you might all be matched with the same driver. But of course it's only useful during a promotion like this, otherwise you might as well request an UberX ride.

  • Used it in the states heaps… Would recommend for short trips within the city - which works well when you're travelling. Longer trips though you'd probably have several pick-ups by the time you get to your destination and it would get annoying.

  • Used it a few weeks ago when I was in Sydney - no issues with any of the trips. On my first trip we actually didn't even pick anyone else up and still got the cheaper rate which was nice - not sure how this works out for the driver though…

Tried it from Sydney cbd to north Sydney - didn’t work
