Laptop for Photo editing?

It's doing my head in looking for a laptop, perhaps people have a suggestions based on my desired features. I'm willing to be convinced my specs need adjusting.

8th Gen I7 processor
prefer 15"
better than 80% sRGB
300nits or more
PWM higher than 500Hz though prefer none of course
8GB ram but must be expandable
256GB SSD
full size SDHC preferred
backlit keyboard (it's a must have)
under 2kg
under $2k but willing to wait for a special to get it there if slightly over

Screens, I'm a bit on the fence with matte vs gloss, typically hate gloss but gloss maybe gets me pen functionality – I really have no idea if I'd like or use a pen but I reckon I would.

Use: I shoot raw and travel a fair bit, final processing I have been doing at home but I'd like to do more whilst travelling. Can't see me playing games but a dGPU is possibly helpful in some processing apps.

  • Hey,
    I saw a Wacom MobileStudio Pro 16 i7 512GB three days ago.
But around $2000+ above your budget and KB is extra.

  • get a bigger SSD, ur OS will take up half of that.. better still, get one with 2 HDD's if u can and make them both SSD's.

go straight for 16GB RAM IMO.

  • Dell XPS 15 9570 - hasn't been released in Australia yet.

    This model is USD $1,499.99

  • I use an i7 8GB 256GB w/ performance base Gen 1 Surface Book. These are around $1700 from Kogan right now. Older Gen processor and not sure how it fares with the rgb range.

The additional screen height is really great for photo and video editing.

I keep everything on a 512Gb slim external SSD and occasionally empty it into OneDrive for Business and Azure Cool Blob Storage.

I only keep semi usable stuff and delete stuff that turned out like shit.
The final exports go into OneDrive and the raw stuff into Azure Blob.

Any reusable assets are the only thing I keep on the internal SSD, also stored on OneDrive.

Oh and the pen is freaking awesome! I use it way more than I thought I ever would.
Touchscreen is a must, so glossy screen it is.

  • @sanchez01 no point in paying a premium for a bigger SSD or RAM, those can be upgraded after purchase for a much lower price than what manufacturers slug you.

@merge yeah looks like what I want, bet there is the Australia tax on it and will be closer to $3k here

@Drew22 can't find a 15" surface book at Kogan, I thought only the surface book 2 comes in 15"?

  • You can pick up a Dell outlet xps that ticks all your boxes apart from 7th Gen
