Swap out phones in a plan (Telstra vs Optus)

I am finishing my 2 year contract with Optus and want to get a Pixel 2 XL which only Telstra carries but I don't want to pay $109/mo for it.

So I'm thinking of signing up for the 25GB plan with Samsung SG9+ from optus for $74/mo then sell the phone, and buy a Pixel 2 outright (they cost almost the same, and looking for one with a receipt if bought from gumtree/ebay). I assume the phones won't be locked to any network, is there anything that might go wrong with my plan before I pull the trigger on the 2 year contract with Optus? Basically I'll be using the Pixel 2 on an Optus contract.

  • Is the $59 Telstra Pixel 2XL friends and family deal still available? Probably worth asking Telstra online chat if they can do it for you. I signed up for this plan a few months ago and sold the phone, made my plan pretty much free.

    • I think they are doing a $69 deal now. Same thing like before but for 69.

  • Can confirm it is still available having signed up earlier this week. Telstra store is offering (but not advertising) the $59 Telstra friends and family deal (although Pixel 2 XL needs $10 handset repayment). Managed to haggle Telstra online chat and got a $59 plan (15 GB data) with $0 handset repayment.

    • Only for new or port-in numbers?

    • JUst chatted online and they only have the 79/mo lease with S9, ewww no. I may have some luck going into the store, is that what you did?

      • Why not just sign up via their website? I can see the S9+ deal that you're taking about still on there. (sorry I just reread your comment and you may be talking about Telstra when I was looking at optus)

      • It was for a port-in from TPG. Have seen others on the other thread port out to a voda/optus $2 sim, so that may be an option. Pixel 2XL has been received late last week. To get the deal, I had quoted a deal ($59 + $0 for Pixel 2 XL) that was available around Christmas, and they managed to match it after some haggling. I had gone to the store before the online chat but that was for Pixel 2 on the $59, with Pixel 2 XL having an extra $10 handset repayment cost.

  • JB are offering the same plan, but can add a bonus 5GB for you. That'll give you 15+5 = 20GB.

  • Sadly I am currently with telstra and that deal is only for new or port-in customers, right?
