Anyone have any experience building SFF computers with GTX1060 or above?

Really want a gaming powerhouse computer but don't know what else is out there besides 1050ti sff computers.

About to finally pull the gun on a sff 1050ti but if anybody knows of a good and most importantly cheap build for a 1060 or above small pc that can maybe fit in a hiking bag let me know.

I am really into miniaturization (sorry rushing this post now) atm and portability but laptop prices are crazy and limited imho so taking the "desktop" route for now.

I am thinking this will be my final decision

Getting a is 2600 16gb dark ram 500gb ssd Samsung Evo 8tb hdd and gtx 1050ti low profile built for about $980 not too bad. Did some research on cpu architectures and not much difference between current gen and sandy Bridge

I think.

Probably a few holes in this build but I can't see much better for a compact build

  • It depends on your budget. But you can basically get whatever you want if you have the cash. It might be worth considering the latest ryzen with gpu included.

  • How small are your talking? My current rig is a GTX 1060 6GB with Mini-ITX (https://au.pcpartpicker.com/b/vP6scf) albeit a bit bigger than what you are after.

There is a fair difference between SandyBridge and Coffee Lake, but nothing wrong with a Sandy Bridge today either. This biggest advantages of the newer architecture is the chipset features….namely M.2 availability, even if you are only going for M.2 to remove HDD, it will go a long way to keep thing small/light/portable.

I have put this build together keeping 16GB/500GB SSD/8TB HDD, and a 1060 6GB, its a lot more expensive, but will be small, and ready to keep rolling for many years. I would also consider a smaller HDD (8TB’s are expensive) and possibly a swap to a AMD Ryzen 5 or an i3 if you are price conscious.

Be a good OzBargainer and shop the parts, rather than take the prices shown on PC PartPicker.

Is the build you have been offered an upgraded Dell/HP/Lenovo unit with a half height 1050Ti? These make great budget machines, but becareful of the PSU outputs.

    • Gonna just stick a 8tb Seagate drive from Amazon US for about 230 aud total shipped.

      • Yeah it's gonna be a Dell sff most likely. I have someone building it already for me in Melbourne and he is gonna ship it when it's done. All up $1000 AUD shipped to Sydney.

        i7-2600
        16gb DDR3
        8tb Seagate HDD
        500gb Samsung EVO SSD
        GTX 1050ti low profile oc
        Windows 10 Home probably
        Some motherboard
        Some PSU
        Wireless card

  • you really think a 2600/1050ti is a gaming powerhouse ? $980 doesnt sound like a great deal to me, look at 2nd hands and you can get it much cheaper.

I built my 8700k/1070 for $1400 using ebay 20% off sales, and some 2nd hand parts.

    • Most of the cost is actually in the ram ssd and hdd what's your full specs

    • cpu is already 400, gpu is at least 500, how on earth did you build the rest of your pc for 500? ram is at least 250, not to mention cooler, case, psu, storage, etc

      • I suspect a cheap refurb Dell/HP/Lenovo office workstation, these can be had for approx $150-200 via eBay.

Hey mate send me a PM and I'll see what I can do to help :)

I would get Hades Canyon Vega-M NUC , faster than your 1050Ti but slower than 1060, all in a small footprint & price wise not far away from your build.

    • Also quite power efficient.

    • What's a rough spec sheet look like and price

  • If you head down the second gen Ryzen route, the mobo bios may need to be updated.

  • You don't necessarily need a SFF GPU… you generally get better value going full sized, bigger heatsinks and fans will always have better cooling for eq TDP. Something like a Silverstone Milo ML08 or Raven RVZ02 case will take a wide 2 slot GPU up to 330mm. It'll be able to handle the heat from any current gen card too.

You can use an SFX-L PSU and M.2 and 2.5" drives. A low profile CPU cooler like Cryorig C7 or Big Shuriken 2 Rev. B will fit if you want to overclock.

    • Can't do full sized.. This needs to be ultra portable so I can basically carry it around like a large laptop.

      • The cases I mentioned are 380 x 85 x 370mm and will go in a big backpack. The split chassis layout like these is a little more expensive but tends to be more portable than cubes

  • So, I have a case that's smaller than an Xbox One in footprint, which contains an i7 7700K, a GTX 1070 and 32GB of ram.

The case I'm using is: http://nfc-systems.com/s4-mini/
I use a Noctua NH-L9i. The i7 7700K is de-lidded of course, temps are around 80C under load.
The GTX 1070 is the Gigabyte GTX 1070 Mini ITX OC 8G: https://www.gigabyte.com/Graphics-Card/GV-N1070IXOC-8GD#kf
Temps on the 1070 aren't going above 85C either!

You can fit higher end cards in there, eg, the GTX 1080 Ti (Zotac makes a mini version) however it needs a tad modding)

Should check out http://smallformfactor.net , plenty of advice and info over there!

    • Wow nice all up roughly how much did it cost. 1070 would be a godsend

      • I think close to $2.4K all up… including shipping… However I did buy some pretty expensive ram, and limited run SFF cases don't run that cheap heh

Could probably do it cheaper depending on the parts you want (eg choosing a T or non-K model CPU, not using the absolutely fastest ram you can buy, etc)

        • Sweet I am talking with Tek Everything and a few other small form factor YouTuber's to try and get some estimates and compare sizes and prices.

A GTX 1080 Ti and 8700K with tonnes amount of ram and storage the size of a small shoe box is something really amazing.

  • build it around Silverstone SG13 case. Need to be mindful about the length of the video card though.
