Spiritual Successor to The Google Nexus 7 Tablet 2013?

Recently this deal garnered a fair bit of attention for a 5 year old tablet!

It was the best tablet I have ever used.

What is the spiritual successor to this? Are there any high quality, decently powered 7-8 inch tablets available today with more up to date specs?

Spiritual successors…. none. Primarily because of lack of google support.

High quality affordable 7-8” tablet there is none in Oz market. There is Lenovo tab 4 8 and huawei mediapads as imports

I'll start with Lenovo P8 Tablet - Great little device.

      It's really the standout candidate.

Lenovo Tab 4 Plus. 4GB/64GB version. Finding it cheap however is hard.

  • I bought a Lenovo Tab 4 8 to replace my old N7. It's a good device and meets my needs well, but it's definitely mid range. Lacks some features. The things I'd like that it doesn't have are a gyro, accelerometer, compass and dual band wifi. While the screen is nice and vivid, the resolution is hard to handle coming from an N7. The screen is honestly fine for 99% of the things I do, though. But at $175 from a local retailer with full warranty, I think it's really good value. Plus it runs PubG Mobile pretty well.

A Tab 4 8 Plus would be the best N7 replacement, I think. They have nice looking specs. But they're not cheap and not available locally. You have to grey import from Gearbest or similar which means no warranty. I couldn't justify the money for something that wasn't coming with any sort of warranty.

The P8 (Tab 3 8 plus) is also an option. The big downside with it is that it's stuck on an older android version and is unlikely to be updated. I don't know what the custom ROM situation is like for it.

I've read that both the Tab 3 8 plus and Tab 4 8 plus are a bit buggy. You can probably deal with that on the tab 3 since they are relatively cheap, but it would be hard to swallow on a $400+ tablet.

    Hope that helps.

  • It's a real shame that there doesn't seem to be much out there. I really loved the size, and everything just worked.
Thanks for your advice so far. If anyone else has other suggestions, would love to hear it.

If anyone is thinking of resurrecting their nexus 7 after seeing these posts recently; I put mine on the charge last night to see if it still works, the screen stayed blank even after a few hours charging. But I held the power and volume buttons down for about 15seconds and it came to life. Had a brief play and it seems like it may still do a job so going to root it and take off all unnecessary apps and see how it performs.

Same happened with my original Nexus 7. Was a beast at the time.

    • I actually purchased the Lenovo P8, precisely to replace my nexus 2013.

Seeing all these posts, I'm of a mind to try and rooting it and installing a different ROM. It works well enough in it's present state, but there's a heap of lag switching between apps and also when I first wake it up. But once it's IN an app, it works perfectly well. Especially for media consumption, it still performs really adequately.

Look for Custom ROM's using F2FS File System.
Our Nexus 7 2012 model is usable again after flashing to F2FS.
I imagine the 2013 model with better performing everything will benefit from this too.

i have a nvidia shield, and on XDA there is some good support for running custom roms. stock rom was terrible. I use it at work (HDMI out, for presentations), study, ebooks and the build quality is terrific.
But yes, its aging too. Good luck finding a decent replacement.

off topic but I still have an original nvidia shield (I assume you're talking about the tablet). The one in the shape of a game controller with a 5 inch screen that flips up. Kids still game on it every weekend. Tough as nails. Great little device.

      • A lot of these tabs and devices are perfect for emulators. definitely awesome builds. yeah i have the tablet. i rarely used it before putting a custom rom on it. now i use it every day.
