Beware of Mountonus - Your Warranty May Be Useless

Be careful of buying items from mountonus if you expect your warranty to be honoured.

On 17th March, 2017, I purchased a Brodit proclip for my car.
I installed it sometime later in the year (maybe August) and after a few months it fell off and wouldn't go on. I contacted mountonus twice by email (the first email being in January 2018) but with no response.
Eventually, I forwarded the email onto them again with the subject "ATTN - SOMEBODY WHO RESPONDS TO EMAILS". This trick worked and somebody responded.

Their response was, "Sorry this item is over the 1-year manufacture warranty, we would be unable to return this to Brodit."

I wrote back with the response, "That is the case now, but that wasnt the case when I first wrote to mountonus. You guys took a very long time to respond."

Their response was, "Sorry the item is out of warranty so we are unable to return to Brodit".

I then wrote to them saying that their action was wrong, immoral, etc and threatened to take any action I could if they failed to refund me, which I am now starting to do.

So be careful of buying from mountonus. They will not respond to emails unless you use a trick like mine. Then if they take too long to respond, and it goes out of warranty, they will take no responsibility.

  • I don't know if UK has consumer law like here is Australia but their website looks old and dodgy af. No wonder they don't reply to emails…

  • Please consult the consumer law. Just because a warranty expires does not mean you do not have rights

    • mountonus is a UK company so unfortunately, Australian consumer law won't protect me in this case.

      • You are right, my bad. Check UK consumer law, otherwise it might just be a lesson in buying from OS

  • threatened to take any action I

Could you please elaborate? What actions may you use to force the retailer to provide a remedy?

    • Post online in forums (like ozbargain) and let them know that I'm doing so. Let them know that I am contacting the manufacturer (whom they represent in some manner). And anything else that they think of!

Just an update - although i wasn't looking for help - just warning people, some people may be curious as to what has happened.

I wrote to them and told them that as they had failed to respond, I would be taking action. I also wrote to Brodit (the manufacturer) and told them of the unconscionable conduct of mountonus. The result is that they are sending me a replacement part.

Unfortunately, this is coming from Brodit, not mountonus, who get away with their activity without great cost (other than hopefully less sales to ozbargainers).
