Activating $2 Vodafone Starter Pack without Recharge

Hi all, I am trying to activate Vodafone $2 starter pack to port out my number but it doesn't seem that I can activate it without recharge? The only option is just to recharge using voucher or credit card. Can someone confirm that it is no longer possible to activate the starter pack without putting in some recharge? Thank you.

  • it doesn't seem that I can activate it without recharge

Well you'd be right. Same as Optus.

  • Ok thank you for your responses.

  • Vodafone does not allow activation anymore without recharge. It’s a legal requirement that all teleco’s have to implement before July. Vodafone and Optus have implemented it already others will follow.

    • Thanks @jimbobaus. That explained it.

    • Can you link to the legislation or media release?

Does this affect recharge vouchers which are bought with cash? Or starter packs with value already on them?

I don't see why this is going to be actually a thing. It makes no sense.

I can only see the commercial reasoning why it is being changed. Maybe it is a result of the efforts of the telco lobby group.

      • I don’t have a link as the rules were changed quietly by amnta

It only affects $2 sim starters. Not packs with pre loaded credit

The idea behind it is to restrict the amount of “dead numbers” annta has to deal with each year, I guess they think it money is loaded on then it’s less likely to go inactive quickly.

  • Telstra SIM is still OK?
Only Optus and VHA SIM are not?

  • Just tried, Optus still allows you to "recharge later" and activate it for you straight away.

    • Was that in store or online?

      • SIM was from store, and activated it online.

        • Ah I couldn't see an option to do it online (but probably wasn't looking properly). I spoke to Live Chat though, and they did it for me.
