TRS - Claiming on Glasses That Have Had Portion Paid by PHI

Travelling overseas soon and wondering if it is possible to claim via the TRS at least some of the GST paid on a pair of prescription glasses that were over $300 but had a portion paid by Private Health extras cover? Total out of pocket to me was about $170. Any idea if this is possible?

TRS just look at the receipt and the amount of GST paid (and who paid it if listed). If the receipt itself was over $300 then yes. If the receipt shows a break down and shows YOU paid less than ~$30 GST then no. $170 is below the minimum $300 you need to claim.

I've had a few 'ebay specials' where Ebay rebate the retailer some and you get 20% off, so the invoice shows the full amount of GST which I've been able to claim back, even though I've not paid the total amount listed. One assumes the company still paid the full amount of GST to the ATO, because they've provided a tax invoice that says they have…. So TRS at that point only care about what amount of GST the company says they've paid and the fact that it's just my name on the receipt.

  • yes its possible.

  • Just make sure that you have been charged GST in the first place…

    • GST only applies to frames. The prescription lenses are GST free.

So I’m curious what the split is. OP what is the total GST amount on the invoice?
