Help with Home Wi-Fi Network Router/Switch Reccomendations

I have been adding bits and pieces to my home network for a 'smart house' and have last night run into issues with the I believe amount of devices on my ISP provided modem. I have an RM mini 3 which won't/has issues connecting to my current 2.4GHz network. However when I create a new network (just change the name so all other devices aren't connected) it will connect just fine. I have around 10 or so devices connected to the 2.4GHz network and thinking it may just be overloading the MyRepublic modem WiFi Hub+. It does state max 10 devices on WiFi.

So I am in the market for something better, not sure whether I want to get another devices that runs off the MyRepublic modem or replace it all together. Currently I am using the file sharing USB on it but it is quite flaky so something that can also host a portable HDD/USB would be great. We still don't have NBN here and looks like not until at least 2020. Current speed is 5 down (about 5k from the exchange) so not sure if a better modem would actually increase the speed. There is no provision of QoS in the current modem I have and being only on 5 down while playing games and the missus loads reddit, my ping sky rockets to minimum 500ms, while I can watch a youtube video and my ping will go from 40 to only 70ms. So if it included some form of QoS would be LOVELY.

I am open to any ideas you may have. Any help would be appreciated.

If you need anymore info about my use case just let me know.

Ubiquiti access point lite, if you want better wifi and supported more client. From what i remember this support 100+ devices. I have around 20 connected without any issues.

Ubiquiti edge router lite or use old computer as ipfire/pfsense router. QOS is support ed with edge router if you turn off DPS and vice vera. While ipfire/pfsense all support QOS and doesn't have much cpu overhead. Even 10 years cpu should work without much issue handling 1GBbit.

  • Linksys WRT1200AC and install OpenWRT on it.
It has a powerful CPU that can do advanced QOS (Smart Queue Management) with ease, powerful WiFi radio (especially the 5Ghz one), and one of the few routers that can max out a 1 Gigabit Ethernet connection with a USB3 (or eSATA) hard drive (most routers can not do much power than 40 MB/s even with USB 3).
    $109 on ebay
