Is Optus Cable Currently Good?

Currently have cable service with Telstra and out of contract.

However, the current modem is playing abit as it is over 3 years old, it keep rebooting and resetting (if it reset, all setting are gone need to reload it, it is fine for me but not my partner when I at work) for every 2 days/3 days. I asked Telstra for re-contract for a 24m and they said they won't provide a new modem to an existing customer. (WTF)

Now I want to left and join others, does the current Optus cable running well (NSW Ryde area)?
Anyone know their Premier League TV still going for the next year?
Do you think I just buy a new modem (out of pocket) and keep Telstra or join Optus?

Anyone have experience on disconnect and rejoin? How long for the disconnect will treat you be new customer when u join again?

  • It should be alright, it comes with fetch. I remember getting a free speed boost too after complaining a bit. All around better than ADSL

  • But maybe try a different service agent overall Telstra will be a better experience

Yeah, but most will be converted to NBN soon.

http://www.speedtest.net/ get 100mb/s except in evenings when gamers crowd the line get 30.

Doubt it's the gamers, it's the streaming services

    • it's the streamers, big downloaders and syncing.

I know you say its resetting the settings. But go into the modem and do a real factory reset and see what happens then.

I had a telstra cable modem locking up every few days, a factory reset fixed it up.

I asked Telstra for re-contract for a 24m and they said they won't provide a new modem to an existing customer

    Interesting… and a bit surprised.

Do you think i just buy a new modem (out of pocket) and keep Telstra or join Optus?

Your best/cheapest option is to buy a new modem from telstra direct or pickup a cheap second hand $50 cable modem on gumtree/fleebay. Just make sure its a cable one.

    • Thanks, i did factory reset it, it last a week and starts again……I doubt i may run too much wifi deices and killing the modem slowly.
may try to get Google Wifi as router and keep the modem stand alone if keeping Telstra

      • hey I had the same thing with optus cable….the provided modem just kept dropping out. In the end I used my old router as the dhcp server and just used their modem as the gateway. No issues since then. too many devices and their base model device just couldnt cope

      • What are your signal levels? You probably need to get the tap in the street looked at.

  • I have Optus Cable and it is pretty good 90% of the time. Pretty fast too, up to 100Mbps download speed.

Sometimes it seems when it rains or on windy days the line drops out I call Optus who then say they are aware of an outage in the area/street and are fixing it.

This can get frustrating as I think they do a temporary patch up rather than a complete fix. Maybe as it will all be replaced by NBN at some stage? (From NBNCo "Planned availability: Progressively from Jan-Jun 2020*")

    • Northern Beaches?

  • I may be mistaken but it's my assumption that unless you are in an NBN area you cannot switch to Optus unless they run two cables for Telstra and Optus.

    • Both of the company serve Cable internet in our area. so still have a choice

  • If you like Telstra, just keep it and fork over 40 dollars for a xiaomi router from aliexpress I reckon.

    • That's not a cable/DOCSIS modem though. However, depending on what the issue is, their existing cable modem might be more stable bridged to another router.

  • I wouldn't go to Optus cable. You need to try talking to Telstra again. What they can and can't do for you varies depending on who you get on the other end of the phone. I got a better model of modem for nothing without recontracting, and my modem wasn't even broken.

    • I've talked to the sales and the social media, they both said no way i can get a new modem. However, they may find a technician to come out to have a test of the modem and try to fix it if possible (don't really want to take a day off and waste time waiting for them to come)

You don't talk to sales and social media. They can't do anything. You ring up and tell them you would like to cancel your service and you are put through to the Retentions team who have a lot of leeway. Then you explain the situation - you are a loyal customer of three years but you'd like to cancel because you can't get a reliable service because of the faulty modem that Telstra has supplied.

  • I’m in Eastwood and Optus cable is shocking. Sure, Speedtest might show I get 29/1.2 mbps but it’s the constant dropouts that make it worse than ADSL. On ADSL I used to get 16/0.6 but it was consistent round the clock.

  • ive been on optus for 7 years. I get around 25-30mbps download most of the time with the occasional drop off to 6-7 mbps during peak hrs. Little to no drops ever.

  • Been with them for 10+ years migrated to NBN from cable no issues what's so ever. :)

You need to speak to the faults area. They'll send you a new modem. If they don't, send me a pm with your username and contact number and I'll get it sorted for you

    • Exactly this.

The sales/recontracting silo doesn't know this, but the faults silo is able to get you a replacement modem at no charge. So just call up the friendly robot on 13 22 03, say "internet faults" and go thru the process.

How do I know? I had to go through this (via Complaints) earlier this month.

      • I try to contact the faults as there are whole area outage in the area. They girl said she can't find any faults at all and book me a technician out this week. however got a call this morning and said it detect it is a network fault and no one will come out!
That is the problem when the outsource call centre has no idea what is going on!
Waste me 2 hours on phone….
It was 2 days my home is at Stoneage!

        • Wow, exactly my experience also. They kept alternating between "there's a network fault, so our network guys will fix it - you don't need a tech visit" and even after the fault is marked as resolved, I still had no internet, so I would call them again and they would dispatch a tech. I think I went thru the tech/no-tech cycle 3-4 times. Eventually I would up with a free Smart Modem (which has 4G fallback) and fixed internet.

Call Telstra complaints and see if you get any traction.

    • No luck, the fault area said i am out of 24m warranty and need to purchase a new one out of pocket!

  • I have Optus cable. Not NBN and get 30/1. Have not seen any dropouts, speeds are consistent.
Paying $90 a month. I get unlimited internet and home phone (With world saver pack) and we also get Fetch TV.

  • I have Optus cable for 10+ years as well. On 100 SpeedPack - same comments as dazfire above.

The issue I will have is that the cable is not NBN compatible - so once I am forced into NBN the cable will be disconnected - no choice.

  • I'm in Turramurra. My Optus cable broadband is far during the day and it's pathetic during peak. Often I get 2-3 Mbps download during peak. Useless. Guess NBN can't be a negative for me at least.

There’s an outage in your area right now…

    • It is 2 days since Saturday evening…….
i realised how Internet is important for my life!
all google products is off and my kids keep asking me the spelling to do their homework!

  • Depends on area and number of users at any given time

  • I'd bite the bullet and get Telstra out to check the service. It could very well be an issue with the cable itself rather than the modem. If it is the modem, they should swap it out. Going to Optus is an option of course, but would at the very least require a long visit from a tech as they run their cable to your house etc…. If you're otherwise happy with Telstra then I'd just get it fixed.

  • I had read that NBN weren't using the Optus cable as it wasn't up to specification, only Telstra cable.
