    (this is just my opinion)

Is foxtel worth it? For the first month yes, from then on, no. Very repetitive, and you're locked in for 24 months. Also, you might want to check what happens if they install the cable to your house and you cancel your contract, because i'm not sure they take it down.

Also: reminds me of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMSkwGYgqLA

Is Tivo worth it? nah, its for people who dont record tv with their computer, and you can't fast forward.

to be honest, i think your best bet is to get better internet, and have a dedicated media centre - There are heaps of people on OCAU who have a tv computer with dual tv tuners + bittorrent + a graphics card capable to streaming out to the tv

Xbox360 + Foxtel basic package for $19.50 per month no contract wins for me.

  • this ^^^

Xbox is ok because the bastards dont lock you in

but the basic package doesn't have some of the better material

    no, not worth it.
read a book, go for a walk, cook something nice, plant a garden, write an actual paper letter, call someone, find a really good bargain to post at ozbargain.com.au, etc

Why bother with foxtel? There is lot of content these days on the digital free to air channels. If not enough just obtain via torrents your favourite shows?

      Torrents all the way..
Paying for TV to watch ads makes no sense to me! If I'm paying, I expect no ads, that's the whole point!
There's never anything worthwhile on when I've house-sat places with Foxtel.

Internet wise, you can get Internet through the Foxtel cable, from Telstra Bigpond Cable.

You have no choice of Service Provider.. it's Bigpond Cable or you have to get ADSL…

You don't have to have Foxtel to get the internet access through the Foxtel cable. If you don't have a cable to your house, I'm not sure what the install cost would be for just internet. Call them to find out.

  • altomic is spot. I need time to learn to cook, play a instrument. Work out & jam in my living room. Peace.

  • We have Foxtel (via Optus Cable). We cannot get decent TV reception, so cable TV is an easy solution.

Free to air doesn't have any dedicated kids TV channels, does it? That's mainly why we keep it on.

I have about 1TB of downloaded TV shows, cartoon and movies - and a Media Player attached to the TV that my 6 year old can use. But the ability to plop down and skip throught 20 or so channels of crap still has a certain attraction on a lazy sunday afternoon.

    • ABC 2 and ABC 3 are for kids

  • FTA has ABC3 which is a dedicated cartoons channel

  • If you want sports, myp2p.eu offers live streams
