How To Ask a Former Employer to be a Reference?

Hi guys,

I'm in the process of writing up my resume and applying for an electrical apprenticeship but I need one more reference. I did some volunteering work at an OP shop for three months three months ago and I want to ask my former employer if he could be my reference but I'm not sure how to ask.

Should I ask him in person, phone call or email?

whatever is easier for you, drop by if its close and you get on well with them (and you know they won't be busy) or if its out of the way or you wouldn't feel comfortable asking in person then a phonecall is probably best.

I would first call or speak to them in person to ask them. If and once they agree to be a referee, I follow up with an email thanking them for agreeing to be a referee. The email will have the job description and selection criteria, as well as my resume. I want to make it easy for them to provide relevant referee comments.

All the above, it depends on what level of contact you have with them still

  • try asking nicely
