One of the advantages that chess has over modern games is that it won't disappear. If you get really good at a computer game, then you'll eventually see the game's popularity dwindle and you won't have much chance to play it against others. You'll be left with skills that you can't apply any more. With chess, there's always opponents online and more books to read than all other games combined.

    • Chess is a finite game. Sooner or later some computer scientist will break the game and create a A.I that will be unbeatable.

      • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH

        no

2^120 if you can do the math is finite in the same way that infinity to the power of infinity is probabley finite too.

Googles alphas zero comes close….. its smashed most current engines

      • I don't think it matters much whether AI engine can solve the game or not for non professional players.

I mean, at this point not even current top chess player Carlsen can beat stock fish chess engine on standard and bullet time control anymore. Also, even if chess is 'solved' but the solution to deal with opponent response would probably be too lengthy for us to remember. I can't say that it's impossible feat but then again that's probably irrelevant for us below 2000 fide rating who just want to enjoy the game. Online cheating problem is annoying but it's not too often.

        • some do some dont, im only just above 1500 fide rated, but have only been playing for 1.5 years. Fischer did claim that it was mostly memorisation and some talent.

      • I'm not sure what your point is. Computers (chess engines) have been superior to the strongest humans for over a decade. They aren't used so much for casual play, but mostly for study/analysis. I was referring to the longevity of chess compared to modern games that fizzle out after a few years at best.

Definitely recommend this ebook. After reading through it and practicing some of the moves, I took my skills to a nearby park and smashed all the old farts. They were in awe of my skills and couldn't believe a young upstart like me was schooling them. These noobs were playing with round black and red pieces but luckily I brought my own crystal chess pieces and showed them I not only had skills but also flair. Do yourself a favour and get this book!
